The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Unit (MMIPU) is a critical unit in New Mexico Department of Justice, this unit will assist our federal, state, and local agencies with investigations and assistance where Indigenous communities are affected by violence. While Native Americans constitute a significant portion of the state’s population, they experience higher rates of unsolved disappearances and murders relative to other ethnic minorities in the state. The New Mexico Department of Justice has been working together with law enforcement agencies and community partners to address these injustices through dedicated efforts such as the MMIP Task Force, legislative measures, and collaborations with tribal nations. The state’s efforts are focused on raising awareness, improving data collection, providing investigative resources, and ensuring justice for victims and their families while working to protect Indigenous women, children, and men from further violence. This unit will raise awareness assist with training and work alongside all agencies to improve the reporting, response, and investigations with indigenous persons.

This coordinator position exists to assist the Special Agent in Charge to maintain, procure, access and monitor all aspects of the units’ functions and capabilities.

Minimum Qualification
Associate’s Degree and three (3) years of experience in program administration or project management in areas related to the purpose of the position. Any combination of education and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling five (5) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment as some statewide travel maybe required. Employment is subject to criminal background check and is conditional pending results of criminal background check. Be of good moral character and not have been convicted of a felony offense by a court of this state, any other state or the United States.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting. Late hours, weekend, and callback work may be required. Will be exposed to regular periods of video display terminal and keyboard usage and stressful situations. Some travel may be required. The ability to function in field operations.
