Description

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

In 2022, the UCSF Center for Global Nursing was founded at UCSF’s Institute of Global Health Sciences (IGHS) to bring together nurses and advanced practice providers (APPs) with a vested interest and/or expertise in global health sciences (GHS) to collaborate, learn, and contribute to global health solutions.
As the most prominent members of the global workforce, the 28 million nurses (59%) in practice dominate population health impact through patient care, research, and leadership. The World Health Organization (2020) and the National Academy of Sciences (2021) both acknowledge the strength and power of nursing and call upon nurses to engage, lead, and act as agents of change in health equity efforts worldwide.
UCSF’s clinical nurses and nursing scientists have long been recognized as world leaders in innovation, clinical care, and research. At the School of Nursing and across the UCSF’s medical centers, UCSF nurses harness an extensive wealth of expertise across a wide range of roles and specialties. The CGN is a joint initiative from the UCSF Institute of Global Health Sciences, UCSF Health, and UCSF School of Nursing to prioritize the engagement and expertise utilization of UCSF’s nurses and APPs in global health sciences.
CGN’s Strategic Goals are:
1. Serve as the central hub for all nursing research, education, and programming in the field of global health sciences.
2. Build pathways and cultivate opportunities for UCSF nurses and APPs to engage in global health initiatives under our three pillars of education, partnership, and research.
3. Increase global nursing and interdisciplinary collaborations at the Institute of Global Health Sciences and worldwide.
4. Provide advocacy for nursing and advanced practice providers across the globe through meaningful collaboration and partnership.
