The Continuing Legal Education Society of BC (“CLEBC”) is the BC legal profession’s preferred source for education and publications. CLEBC is a not-for-profit society that derives all its income from the sale of courses and publications. With more than 80 live and online courses each year, and an online and print library of more than 50 books, we support BC’s 14,000 lawyers in all aspects of their practice.
We have an opening for a part-time (4 days per week (0.80 FTE)) Program Lawyer position. Reporting to the Director of Programs, the successful candidate will be responsible for creating, designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating legal education courses primarily in the areas of business, tax, labour, employment, human rights, and skills-based workshops.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Law degree with a minimum of three years of law practice experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Degree/diploma in education, courses, and/or experience in adult education are an asset.
• Strong planning, organizational, project management, and administrative skills.
• Sound communication, facilitation, interpersonal, and conflict management skills.
• Strong leadership skills.
• Demonstrated decision-making, problem-solving, analytical, and conceptual abilities.
• Ability to recruit and motivate volunteers.
• Ability to facilitate the generation of ideas.
• Ability to interface effectively with peers and clients in the legal community.
• Comfortable and adaptable with new and evolving technologies.
• Practice experience in the areas of business, tax, labour, employment, human rights, and general litigation is an asset.
  CLEBC offers a competitive salary and benefit package. The starting salary range for this position is $80,480 – $94,720.

1. Surveys and evaluates current education climate, identifies appropriate course ideas taking into consideration CLEBC’s mission, vision, values and strategic plan, need, marketability, and profitability
2. Participates with other Programs Department course designers in the development of an annual curriculum and budget for the Programs Department.
3. Prepares financial estimates for each prospective course.
4. Designs, develops, and implements courses including conferences, seminars, and workshops. Modes of delivery for courses include in-person only, online only, and hybrid (combination of in-person and online).
5. Recruits, motivates and manages contributors, including course chairs, planning committee members, and faculty members throughout the course planning process.
6. Facilitates the flow of ideas in the creation and development of courses and provides advice and guidance on different learning approaches (e.g. use of panel discussions, demonstrations, role plays, breakout sessions, polling software) to optimize the learning experience of learners.
7. Identifies opportunities for effective use of technology to improve overall access and/or quality of the learning experience of learners.
8. Chairs course planning meetings, faculty meetings pertaining to course content and design, and any other meetings necessary as part of the course planning process.
9. Oversees the preparation of each course in consultation with internal staff, troubleshooting as required to resolve any problems and ensuring program content meets original objectives.
10. Working with the marketing group, drafts marketing material including course descriptions, marketing copy, and any other necessary marketing/communication pieces.
11. Provides input to the marketing group with respect to the marketing of particular courses, monitors registrations, and makes recommendations as to changes to the marketing strategy as required to ensure optimal registration numbers.
12. Monitors the performance of course registrations, ensuring objectives are met, postponing or cancelling courses when necessary.
13. On the event date, introduces the course, manages contributors, oversees the execution, and troubleshoots as required.
14. Upon completion of courses, provides constructive feedback to chairs and faculty, holds debriefing meetings if necessary, and incorporates appropriate changes in course design and content for future courses.
15. Works with members of the legal profession, including the Law Society of British Columbia, the Canadian Bar Association, the judiciary, and other legal community representatives in the performance of his/her duties.
16. Keeps up-to-date on changes in the law, needs of the profession, adult education techniques, and participates in professional development activities.
17. Performs other related duties as assigned.
