Description The Lead Teacher will work closely with ACHD’s Education Department to deliver vibrant, culturally relevant afterschool programs for African Diaspora youth in South King County. Our programs take a holistic approach that integrates STEAM, social-emotional learning (SEL), outdoor education, and academic enrichment. Teaching will take place at ACHD’s Learning Center and at school site locations during or after school hours. The role includes leading classes, developing curriculum, mentoring program assistants, collaborating with the Education team on program design and evaluation, and managing teaching materials and program inventory. The Lead Teacher will also transport students in ACHD vans to and from program sites and field trips, ensuring safe and reliable access, as necessary. The ideal candidate is an experienced educator who loves the outdoors, is passionate about equity and justice, and is committed to creating safe, inclusive, and engaging spaces for youth. Requirements Position Duties: Work closely with the Education team and other staff members to develop timelines and workplans to implement department projects Work with the outreach team to connect with families and build community Collaborate with the Education team to design, plan, and evaluate programming Complete program reports, lesson documentation, and student progress notes as assigned Lead and teach afterschool program classes and enrichment activities Teach at offsite locations in schools during or after school hours as scheduled Develop and adapt curriculum that integrates STEAM, SEL, and outdoor education Transport students safely in ACHD transit vans to and from programs and field trips Check students in/out according to ACHD policy and ensure physical and emotional safety Mentor program assistants and volunteers, modeling culturally responsive and age-appropriate teaching practices Teach and actively participate in summer programming, which may include onsite instruction, camps, and field trips. Manage and maintain education programs’ inventory Maintain teaching materials and ensure classroom spaces are welcoming and organized Communicate regularly with caregivers, community partners, and colleagues. Participate in professional development and team trainings Required Qualifications: 2-5 years experience as a teacher Comfortable in both informal and outdoor education settings Excellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines Ability to design and teach interdisciplinary, standards-aligned curriculum for elementary, middle and high school ages Strong verbal communication and writing skills Experience applying differentiated classroom and behavior management techniques Competence in creating safe, culturally relevant, anti-racist, and age-appropriate social-emotional learning teaching spaces Experience working respectfully with diverse communities, including non-English speakers Enthusiasm for STEAM education, Outdoors, and Social Emotional Learning, and knowledge of NGSS curriculum design Regular weekday evening availability, and occasional weekend field trip availability Valid WA state driver’s license You must be able to provide a clean driving record National background check and verification of COVID vaccination Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in education or related field Fluency in an African language, especially Somali, Amharic, Tigrinya, or Swahili CPR and First Aid certified Current WA state teaching certification Comfortable teaching in an outdoor context Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
