POSITION SUMMARY

The UNM Clinical & Translational Science Center (CTSC) at the Health Sciences Center (HSC) is seeking an experienced Programmer Analyst 2 to provide extraction and analysis of clinical data and enforce regulatory compliance for data security and patient privacy. The Programmer Analyst 2 will work as a member of the CTSC’s Informatics Core team on the utilization and maintenance of local and national databases available to HSC investigators for research. The role involves assessing and guiding research requests, querying clinical databases, ensuring data integrity and security, and collaborating with research teams.
The CTSC is a member of the national Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA) consortium, funded by the National Institutes of Health. “Translational” science implies translating research from laboratory and clinical trials, to adoption in health systems, through the cycle of “bench” to “bedside” to “community.” The CTSC promotes the expansion of clinical research and the emergence of community voice in the direction and implementation of clinical research.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree; at least 1 year of progressively responsible experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution and/or experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified may be interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with relational databases and SQL.
  • Experience with cleaning, analysis, management, and reporting of data.
  • Familiarity with medical settings, concepts, and vocabulary.
  • Experience with electronic health records, specifically Cerner.
  • Education, training, and experience in health informatics, clinical care, or medical research.
  • In depth knowledge of advanced operating system, network, or application management tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel, both orally and in writing.
  • Skills in technical planning, organizing, and adapting within a multi-tasking environment.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be authorized to work for ANY employer in the US. • This position is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. If selected for this position and not a local resident, you must be willing relocate at your own expense. • If selected as a finalist, submission of a portfolio of up to three items representing a range of work products will be requested (e.g. code samples, documentation, formatted reports, links to live websites, GitHub, etc.).

Responsibilities
  • Conduct data mining from clinical databases and electronic health records (EHRs) using SQL and Business Intelligence tools.
  • Perform extraction, management, cleaning, linking, combining, and merging of datasets from multiple sources, including the delivery of datasets with de-identification procedures such as date-shifting and randomization.
  • Exploring EHR data for validity, reproducibility, and various levels of consistency.
  • Continuously explore evolving data resources to develop and extend an in-depth understanding of the clinical data contents and medical concepts.
  • Communicate extensively with faculty, staff, and students of the HSC to understand their study questions, support their research goals, and provide guidance for developing clear and actionable data requests consistent with available data resources. This includes translating specifications into precise implementation and adapting to what is found in the medical data.
  • Ensure compliance with complex regulatory frameworks including HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and IRB (Institutional Review Board) for privacy of patient data and ethical oversight of human subjects research.
  • Participate on institutional committees and data governance processes; exercise the highest standards for privacy, security, storage, and transmission of data.
  • Designs and develops scripts to automate tasks for departments and/or study teams.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
