Description The Atlanta History Center is seeking a detail-oriented, organized, and collaborative professional with a minimum of one year of archival processing experience to join our team. This two-year temporary position involves working closely with other archivists who will arrange, describe, appraise, and rehouse primarily paper-based textual materials, as well as oversized architectural design plans. The selected candidate will adhere to the institution’s practices and guidelines to create and publish finding aids for our collections Requirements Analyze, sort, arrange, label, rehouse, and describe manuscript and visual archival records Develop processing plans for each collection Assess and appraise the research and archival value of collections Perform basic preservation measures such as unfolding and flattening documents, removing rusted metal clips and rehousing materials in approved archival enclosures Consult with supervisor on more advanced preservation measures or conservation measures for collections Create finding aids based upon Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and the division’s processing manual in ArchivesSpace Participate in Description and Access Committee meetings to edit and approve finding aids Foster and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, donors, volunteers, senior managers, and trustees, emphasizing tact, diplomacy, flexibility, collaboration, professionalism, and discretion. Perform other responsibilities as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Required: Bachelor’s degree (background in history is preferred) Preferred: Master’s degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, History, or a related field. Demonstrated experience in arranging, describing, and preserving archival collections. Experience or familiarity with using ArchivesSpace. Knowledge of archival standards and best practices, including DACS (Describing Archives: A Content Standard) Strong analytical skills to assess and interpret archival materials. Ability to identify issues and recommend solutions during processing. Experience working collaboratively with professional colleagues Excellent written, oral, and visual communication skills. Self-motivated with the ability to work independently. Creative thinker with strong problem-solving capabilities Understanding proper handling techniques for historic documents and photographs. Ability to lift 40 pound boxes. Ability to work with diverse subject materials and images, including those that may be deemed offensive, emotional, or difficult. A demonstrated commitment to preserving and providing access to historical materials. Proven ability to work diplomatically with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Availability to work a weekly schedule of 37.5 hours. Other Requirements Satisfactory criminal background check. Satisfactory financial background check.
