Description

The Centre for Text Margins is looking for a part-time Project Employee for the founding phase of a new academic design community
The Centre for Text Margins is a new academic community for typography and text design practice that will be launched within Aalto University in autumn 2025. Over the next three years, we will co-create events, exhibitions, publications and an online platform, and aim to form unconventional working models in an academic environment. The Centre will be built on experimental knowledge production based on the practice of typography and text design, interdisciplinary encounters, and thinking together. Our working models and approaches are yet to take shape – which is why we are looking for you, someone who is excited about building something new in the face of uncertainty, and who can take responsibility but also ask questions when necessary. You understand that you are co-founding something that is not yet ready.
We are looking for a Project Employee to help set up the community in practice and also frame its content. The Project Employee will work 40% time (14,5 h/week) for three years. The contract is scheduled to start in August-September 2025.
The role is suitable for a visual communication designer or other creative with some project-based work experience, who is capable of both administration and high enthusiasm. The Project Employee will have the opportunity to be a key voice in the development of the Centre and thus in the shaping of their own tasks. A creative practice and/or research interest with a focus on text, written language and typography would be an advantage, as would fluency in both English and Finnish.

Your tasks may include, for example:

  • Following and documenting current phenomena in the field of text design
  • Ideation, background research, and arrangements for an event, exhibition or workshop
  • Organising work within the Centre and liaising with networks
  • Planning and running communication activities, including graphic design tasks
  • Basic budget monitoring

We are looking for someone with:

  • Experience of working on project basis in design, art and/or communication
  • Good basic knowledge and skills in graphic design and typography
  • Interest in artistic research or academic work in the creative fields
  • Self-direction, initiative and good organisational skills

We offer:

  • Flexible working hours and the opportunity to influence the content of the position
  • The opportunity to be part of the creation of the first academic community focused on typography, and of working models that are unconventional in the academy

Working time is flexible two days a week both on Aalto University campus or remotely in Finland when required. The monthly salary of the position is 3500€ (paid according to 40%).
Ready to apply?

To apply, we kindly ask you to submit these materials by end of Tuesday 28.5.2025 (Eastern European time UTC +2):

  • A letter explaining in particular your working approach and what inspires you in this role
  • Portfolio (pdf or link)
