THE OPPORTUNITY:

RPS, a Tetra Tech Company, is adding a highly experienced and self-motivated Project Engineer to support oceanographic instrumentation projects for clients in the U.S. and abroad. This is an hourly, as-needed position based in Charleston, South Carolina. We’re looking for a flexible problem solver with 8–10 years of hands-on experience in marine systems and oceanographic data collection.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Hydrography, or Oceanographic Instrumentation.
  • 8–10 years of professional experience working with oceanographic or marine data systems.
  • Experience with marine construction, survey, or dredging projects.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work independently and adapt to changing project needs.
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S. without restrictions.
  • Eligibility for a U.S. passport and TWIC card.
  • Fluent in English with strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Must meet offshore medical and safety training requirements (or be able to obtain them).
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
Responsibilities
  • Lead teams in the design, assembly, installation, deployment, and recovery of oceanographic measurement systems.
  • Integrate and troubleshoot oceanographic instruments including:


    • ADCPs (Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers)

    • Water quality and level sensors
    • Meteorological stations
    • Acoustic releases and telemetry systems
    • Troubleshoot low-voltage systems, RS232/RS422 communications, solar power setups, and data loggers.
    • Conduct data reviews and prepare technical reports.
    • Support coastal field operations and offshore deployments.
    • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
    • Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
    • Work in a safe manner at all times and report all health and safety incidents and concerns.
    • Additional duties as required.
