Our Downer Infrastructure Delivery team is proud to support the Ōtaki to North of Levin (Ō2NL) Highway Project. We’re looking for a motivated and experienced Project Engineer to join the Ō2NL South Alliance, playing a key role in delivering earthworks and local roads activities for this major infrastructure project.

ABOUT Ō2NL:

The Ōtaki to north of Levin (Ō2NL) highway will dramatically improve safety, resilience, and efficiency, as well as increasing transport choices for the area’s growing population. The Ō2NL project is led in partnership with NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, Muaūpoko Tribal Authority, local hapū of Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga and council partner Horowhenua District Council.
This transformative project is being delivered using a two-alliance approach, with each alliance delivering a section of the road and associated works. Together alliance partners are working to create a positive legacy for the region, led by our project principles to tread lightly with the whenua and create an enduring legacy. We are seeking excellent people for this unique opportunity to work and collaborate with leading industry organisations.
Te kōwhiringa | The Opportunity
In this role, you’ll take the lead on the construction of earthworks and roading infrastructure. This includes overseeing excavation, cut/fill operations, subgrade preparation, and pavement layers.
Operating as part of an integrated project team, this role contributes to the successful execution of the sub-alliance construction programme. You’ll coordinate technical delivery, managing subcontractors, and help align design with construction on the ground.
Your commitment to health and safety will ensure all work is delivered safely and efficiently, while upholding the values of both the alliance and the wider project.

NGA PŪKENGA MATUA | IMPORTANT SKILLS

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline; additional certifications in earthworks supervision, soil mechanics, or construction management are advantageous.
  • 4+ years of experience in civil infrastructure, particularly in bulk earthworks, roading, or site development, with proven capability in site-based delivery, project coordination, and subcontractor management.
  • Strong understanding of New Zealand standards, local council regulations, and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Skilled in interpreting design drawings, specifications, and survey data, and experienced in using inspection and test plans (ITPs), compaction testing, and material compliance processes.
  • Proficient in project scheduling, cost tracking, and variation management, with experience using tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Trimble, or GPS-based machine control systems.Culturally respectful and committed to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
