Description 1 REPORTING RELATIONSHIP Reports to the Manager of Product Design / Engineering. 2 PURPOSE 2.1 Function 2.1.1 Develops engineering designs, specifications, cost estimates, written reports, technical specifications and material specifications for engineering projects; 2.1.2 Works with various disciplines providing overall engineering direction; 2.2 Authority 2.2.1 Ensure implementation of necessary procedures and work instructions to meet requirements of product design system. 3 DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 3.1 Conducts comprehensive engineering planning, design and operational studies of components; 3.2 Performs design work including researching data, conducting feasibility and economic studies, and determining design criteria in accordance with required standards and codes; 3.3 Design product (truck/automotive steering columns) in teams and individually using CAD (Incumbent must be proficient in use of CAD or training in the program); 3.4 Perform analysis of product: stress analysis, tolerance analysis (stack-up analysis) etc. and also document these analysis for various presentations; 3.5 Participate in DFMEA, PFMEA, & DFM, tolerance stack ups; 3.6 Utilization of design software Unigraphics and Microsoft Office; 3.7 Optional utilization of design software Ideas and Catia; 3.8 Apply understanding of manufacturing, economics, design, materials, blue prints, GD&T, drafting, QMS procedures, and validation of product and verification of design; 3.9 Prepares project documents and reports; 3.10 Reviews and checks engineering drawings, plans, computations, estimates and reports for completeness and accuracy; 3.11 Prepares scope of engineering project; 3.12 Confers with manufacturing personnel on feasibility of design; 3.13 Implements use of new technologies, cost savings techniques/materials, and improved safety designs; 3.14 Develops standards for project; 3.15 Ensures that the right product is developed and delivered to meet Company objectives for safety, quality, delivery and cost; 3.16 Assists in tracking the project against its schedule and budget; 3.17 Prepares periodic management and customer reports and presentations; 3.18 May oversee Product Engineering activities as required; 3.19 Performs engineering calculations; 3.20 Recommends new processes where needed for quality improvement, cost reduction or on-time delivery; 3.21 Other duties as assigned. 4 MEASUREMENTS/COMPETENCIES 4.1 Accomplishment of set goals, including documentation, organization, and timeliness; 4.2 Performance in areas of responsibility (including internal audit performance); 4.3 Problem solving accomplishments; 4.4 Effectiveness of designs; 4.5 Successful annual performance reviews. 5 SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY This position has no supervisory responsibility. Requirements 6 WORK ENVIRONMENT This job operates in a professional environment, as well as a manufacturing environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment. This role also is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. 7 QUALIFICATIONS 7.1 High School Diploma or equivalent; 7.2 Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent; 7.3 Preferred two years automotive or heavy truck experience; 7.4 At least 1 year as a Product Engineer, or evidence of the capability to perform the job duties through previous employment or prior work experience; 7.5 Good communication skills, both oral and written; 7.6 Team player; 7.7 Self-motivated. 8 PHYSICAL DEMANDS 8.1 Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 8.2 Must be able to lift 20 pounds at times. 8.3 Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization’s facilities. 9 POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK This is a full-time position. Typical days and hours of work are Monday through Friday.
