ROLE:
Surerus Murphy Joint Venture (SMJV) is seeking a Project Engineering Lead to support pipeline and/or oil & gas facility construction projects in Northern Alberta, Northern BC, and Southern BC.
The Project Engineering Lead is an integral part of the field-based Construction Management Team and directly supervises the entirety of a projects Technical Services group, consisting of Engineers, Drafters, Surveyors, GIS Technicians, and Drone Operators all supporting the construction of world class pipeline infrastructure.
Interfacing with the Project Manager, Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and Technical Services Group on a continual basis, the Project Engineering Lead is responsible to ensure that all technical work products and requirements are identified and developed in accordance with all project requirements, applicable standards, specifications and regulations, and delivered with the class leading professionalism, practicality, safety and efficiency reflective of SMJV’s Core Values and company history.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Understand and apply client standards and specifications, internal company standards, industry codes and standards, as well as regulatory requirements relative to the scope of SMJV’s construction projects.
- Review and understand relevant project specific documentation to determine the deliverables required prior to and during the works.
- Effectively allocate Technical Service Group resources to ensure optimum delivery and maximum return while managing risk.
- Based on project requirements, and with input from Construction, supervise and provide guidance for the development and issuance of drawings, documents, and supporting construction including, but not limited to:
- lifting
- hazardous slopes
- crossings
- civil and grade works
- ditch and excavations
- hydrostatic testing
- piling
- pipe fabrication and installation
- Take a personal interest in identifying, coaching, and developing junior and intermediate engineering staff.
- Assess works to be completed and associated deliverable requirement to determine the need for, and level of, engagement by specialized third party engineering resources.
- Coordinate with Construction personnel to identify deficiencies or contradictions in project documentation or work plans.
- Review RFI’s prior to submission to ensure accuracy.
- Ensure that deliverables requiring validation are reviewed and validated in accordance with internal standards and applicable Provincial Professional Practice guidelines, including completion of Engineering Risk Reviews.
- Coordinate with Construction personnel to ensure that project documentation is clearly understood and able to be applied in a safe and efficient manner.
- Ensure Field Reviews of Engineering Work Products are completed and documented appropriately. Where necessary implement corrective actions or identified opportunities for improvement.
- Establish and promote best practice in health, safety and environmental matters in conjunction with the HSE department, including taking part in development and review of Job Hazard Assessments.
- Attend daily internal construction meetings to maintain up to date understanding of individual work fronts, communicate changes or progress directly to Construction Management and Foreperson, and relay updates back to the remainder of the Technical Services Group.
- Attend regular external construction meetings to raise technical challenges or issues discovered by SMJV or address similar technical challenges identified by the client.
- Proactively identify and communicate resource requirements for project execution to Senior Management.
- Where third party engineering deliverables are required, working with Project Management to develop RFP packages, including scope of work, schedule requirements, and provision of all applicable technical documentation.
- Assist Project Management team with review of subcontractor packages to ensure compliance with technical requirements and engineering best practices.
- Coordinate with subcontractors to ensure third party deliverables are developed to the same, or higher, standard as SMJV developed deliverables.
- Maintain close contact with the Project Director and all required subcontractors and consultants during planning to ensure plans contain adequate information and meet established schedule, cost and productivity objectives.
- Coordinate with the engineering and GIS department to ensure knowledge transfer and maintenance of technical best practices.
- Provide operational, strategic, and contractual advice and service to bid preparation and project management when associated with design management and engineering.
- Inform management of project engineering team activity and progress achieved.
- Ensure that all changes in Client/Company standards are captured reviewed and briefed out to all project staff who have safety critical involvement.
- Assist in managing and reviewing the progress of subcontractor’s construction schedules.
- Provide technical support to Project Managers.
- Provide info and assist Project Manager in the preparation of progress reports/meeting minutes.
- Coordinate and monitor schedule updates, invoices, and submittals.
- Actively participate in project orientations, project administration, coordination, and close-out.
- Build effective relationships with customers, design team, subcontractors, and suppliers, that reflect and support company core values and meet or exceed the customer’s expectations.
- Analyze and resolve field construction issues.
- Participate in the preparation of construction schedules and milestones and monitor the projects progress against the established project schedule.
- Assist in the selection of team members as required by Senior Management.
- Provide input on the performance of Project Team Members to their supervisors.
Note: In addition to these duties personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required in order to support the objectives of the company.
