Position Summary
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Major Project Estimator is a key professional in financial planning and budget development for large mining projects, both nationally and internationally. Working in multidisciplinary teams, the incumbent ensures the preparation of reliable and detailed cost estimates for various project phases, including conceptual studies, feasibility studies, engineering, construction and start-up operations. This role requires an excellent understanding of mining operations, technical constraints, logistical issues, as well as strong economic analysis skills. More specifically, the Major Project Estimator will be required to:
- Analyze technical project documents (plans, specifications, geotechnical and hydrogeological reports, etc.) to fully understand the scope of work, specific constraints and customer needs.
- Develop CAPEX (capital expenditure) and OPEX (operational expenditure) cost estimates for all phases of a major mining project (studies, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning).
- Structure estimates according to international standards (e.g. AACE Class 5 to Class 1) and according to company and client financial templates.
- Integrate project delivery strategies (EPCM approach, tendering, subcontracting, modular construction, international sourcing, etc.) into cost estimates.
- Collaborate with technical disciplines (mining, process, mechanical, electrical, infrastructure, logistics) to gather the technical data needed for cost development.
- Maintain internal cost databases, escalation factor, market trends and unit prices to ensure representative estimates of reality.
