BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P PD PROJECT MANAGEMENT Department of the P OPERATIONS PLANNING & CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional). This posting seeks to fill at either the Project Manager or Sr Project Manager level; whichever level is most suited to the qualifications of the applying candidate.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Advanced knowledge of project management principles, and engineering and construction practices in the transmission and distribution and/or generation fields, normally acquired through college-level training and/or equivalent experience.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification from a nationally recognized organization such as the Project Management Institute (PMI), a plus.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications such as MS Project, UI Planner, Ellipse/DARS, Microsoft Word, Excel, SAP etc.
  • Knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.
  • Knowledge of basic Safety principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.

SKILLS REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent written, oral and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to direct, influence, motivate and persuade various groups or individuals.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Several (3-5 years) experience as a project manager, construction manager, designer, engineer, or in a project support position that involved hands on experience with small to medium scale projects, preferably within the electric utility industry. A degree in a related field may be substituted for three (3)-years of experience.
  • Few (1-3) years of project management experience for small to large engineering/construction projects.
  • Experience with the regulatory, social, public affairs (neighborhood boards, community groups, government agencies, political leaders, media, etc.) processes involved with land use issues.
  • Few (1-3) years of leadership experience is desirable.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Extensive knowledge of project management principles, and engineering and construction practices in the transmission, distribution, substation, and/or generation fields, normally acquired through college-level training and/or equivalent experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Working closely with Supervisor and Sr. Project Managers:

  • Plans, organizes, and manages all project and/or program tasks associated with scoping, budgeting, design, approval, procurement, construction, placement in operation, and closing of projects. Provides project leadership and work direction and secures commitment from team members in meeting project milestones. Ensures team members have all resources, information, and direction necessary to successfully perform their jobs. Evaluates progress and performance of team members and implements personnel actions necessary to accomplish objectives including recognition, redirection, recruitment, and replacement of team members.
  • Serves as the focal point for all programs/projects related matters. Works with and through community groups, neighborhood boards, government agencies, the media, other utilities and private companies, the City Council, the State Legislature, and the PUC to disseminate information, address concerns, obtain permits and approvals, and resolve project-related problems. Prepares and provides testimonies and presentations at internal strategic meetings, public meetings, and regulatory hearings as necessary.
  • Develops necessary strategies required to meet program/project goals. Makes early identification of potential problem areas. Solves problems to ensure attainment of program/project goals. Redirects planning, design, purchasing, permits/approvals or construction to prevent or minimize constraints or actions which may delay schedules or add costs to programs and projects in construction. Conducts inspections of construction sites as necessary.
  • Develops and maintains program/project schedules. Prepares and presents program/project progress and cost reports internally and externally as required.
  • Works with Regulatory Affairs, Budgets, Management Accounting & Financial Services, Community Relations, Government Relations, Corporate Communications, Legal, Energy Delivery departments, and others in obtaining approvals. Obtains Company authorizations for expenditures for funds for engineering, materials, and construction. Reviews and approves procurement for program permitting, design, material, and construction and for project material and construction.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
