PROJECT MANAGER – SUBSTATION PROTECTION RELAY INSTALLATION & UPGRADE

We are seeking an experienced and technically skilled Project Manager to lead the planning, coordination, and execution of protection relay upgrades and new installations across key substation projects. You’ll be responsible for delivering highly regulated engineering works on time, within scope, and in strict compliance with operational safety and design standards.

Key Responsibilities1. Project Planning & Design Coordination

  • Conduct detailed site surveys and review existing drawings to scope work for replacement or new relay protection schemes.
  • Collaborate with protection engineers to develop designs aligned with the Employer’s base scheme, including circuit, wiring, and GA diagrams.
  1. Deficiency Identification & Remediation
  • Detect and manage pre-existing scheme deficiencies that may impact implementation.
  • Oversee prerequisite works (e.g., voltage selection schemes) ensuring new relays receive correct voltage inputs.
  1. System Integration & Communication
  • Manage integration of protection relays with RTUs and ensure seamless communication across substation control systems.
  • Coordinate necessary RTU upgrades/replacements and update RTU I/O schedules ("Whitebook") accurately.
  1. Procurement & Logistics
  • Handle procurement and timely delivery of all materials including cabling, panel equipment, relay frames, and auxiliary components.
  1. Testing & Commissioning
  • Lead and validate system testing and commissioning, ensuring all protection functions and performance metrics are met.
  1. Documentation & Repository Management
  • Work with document control to ensure all diagrams, test files (.occ), relay configs, and grading studies are accurately uploaded to client systems.
  1. Operational Safety & SAP Liaison
  • Coordinate Senior Authorised Person (SAP) support and lead outage planning.
  • Prepare switching schedules and manage safety documentation in accordance with Operational Safety Rules.

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrated experience managing protection relay upgrade/install projects within live substation environments.
  • Solid understanding of substation design, protection systems, RTUs, and related communication protocols.
  • Familiar with SSEN or DNO design and documentation standards.
  • Strong stakeholder coordination and contractor management experience.
  • Excellent documentation and safety compliance background.
