Why does the job exist?
This position provides statewide leadership over the pronghorn program. The position provides internal and external statewide coordination on project management with various cooperators including; federal agencies, state agencies, private landowners, and the outdoor recreation community.
How does it get done?
The key responsibilities of this position are focused on guiding the management of pronghorn across New Mexico in the context of state regulations. The position coordinates statewide biological surveys and makes pronghorn management recommendations. The position will plan, prioritize, administer, and work with a team to lead all aspects of the Department’s pronghorn program. This includes the development and implementation of statewide goals and objectives. The position monitors population trends and develops appropriate population models. Develop recommendations for hunting licenses, research projects, habitat improvement, and landowner engagement.
Additionally, tasks include coordination of timely and accurate project updates, oversight of contracts, development of technical reports for Department leadership. This includes the appropriate application of field and survey techniques to include data collection and analysis of pronghorn management efforts. The position will participate in meetings and assist with public outreach. The position assists with the development and implementation of the Department’s pronghorn private land programs including conducting property reviews, developing management plans, and assisting landowners in enrolling their properties into these programs.
Annually, pronghorn surveys are flown using fixed-wing aircraft. The position is responsible for all aspects of this project including logistics and will be the primary observer for all pronghorn surveys.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor’s degree in biology, fisheries science/management, wildlife science/management, animal science, forestry, ecology, or similar related natural resource degree and one (1) year directly related work experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling five (5) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
This job requires both office and field work. Office work consists of a normal indoor environment with continuous sitting, a significant amount of time using a computer and talking on the phone. Some standing and lifting of heavy items (10-40lbs). Field work consists of normal outdoor environments including exposure to the sun, wind, rain, snow, and biting insects. Must be able to operate a 4x4 vehicle, operate an off highway vehicle, and pull trailers loaded with equipment and supplies. The ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 80lbs and sometimes more) is required. Occasional overnight travel is required as is occasional weekend, early morning, or evening work. The ability to work outside in inclement weather (hot, cold, rain, snow, etc.) is occasionally required. The ability to conduct biological surveys in helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft is required. Specific tool use may include long-range thermal camera, GPS, GIS, telemetry, cameras, spotting scopes, binoculars, environmental measuring instruments, capture equipments such as net guns, dart guns, and laboratory items such as syringes, scalpels, thermometers, scissors, and standard construction tools such as drills, saws, hammers, shovels, wrenches, axes, and chainsaws.
