JOB DESCRIPTION:

As a PSV / HGV Diagnostic Technician you will be responsible for fault finding, repair, and installation of electrical systems in public service vehicles (PSVs) such as buses and coaches. The ideal candidate will have experience working with complex electrical systems, fault diagnostics, and ensure all work is carried out to high safety and quality standards.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

  • Proven experience as an Auto Electrician or Master Technician, preferably in a PSV, HGV, or commercial vehicle environment
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle electrical systems, diagnostics, and repair techniques
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced workshop environment
  • Good understanding of health and safety practices within an engineering workshop
  • Flexibility to work various shifts or callouts as required
  • Experience with CANbus systems and diagnostic tools (essential)
  • Knowledge of hybrid or electric vehicle systems – Upskilling training will be provided
  • Additional certifications in electrical safety or manufacturer-specific training (desirable)
  • PSV/HGV driving licence (desirable)

Responsibilities
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain electrical systems on PSVs and HGVs, including lighting, wiring, batteries, alternators, starters, HVAC systems, engine management systems, and control panels
  • Use diagnostic tools and software to identify faults in electronic and electrical systems
  • Install new electrical components and systems as required, including retrofit work (e.g., CCTV, audio-visual systems, ticketing machines, telematics)
  • Interpret wiring diagrams and technical drawings accurately
  • Work closely with the Technical Department to rectify complex faults
  • Belief in a “1st time fix” approach, ensuring vehicles don`t return for repeat failures, keeping customers vehicles on the road as much as possible
  • Work with engineering and maintenance teams to ensure vehicle availability and performance
  • Maintain accurate records of all work carried out, including faults, parts used, and time spent
  • Mentoring and training apprentices in all aspects of fault finding and rectification
  • Adhere to all company policies and health & safety regulations, promoting a safe working environment
  • Keep up to date with the latest vehicle technologies and attend relevant training courses where necessary
