Description

Are you a passionate and skilled Consultant Psychiatrist looking for a unique and rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in one of Australia’s most diverse and culturally rich regions?
We are seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to join the Kimberley Mental Health and Drug Service in Broome, located within the vibrant and picturesque Kimberley region. As part of the Broome Mental Health Unit (BMHU), you will play a crucial role in providing comprehensive mental health services across this expansive area, including remote communities.
In this dynamic and challenging role, you will lead a multidisciplinary team, including psychiatry trainees, interns, Aboriginal Liaison Officers, nurses, and allied health professionals. You will also provide clinical leadership and contribute to daily mental health assessments in the Broome Hospital’s emergency department. Your role will involve delivering high-quality care in a culturally sensitive manner, particularly for Aboriginal communities, which represent the majority of the patient population.
You will supervise junior medical staff, ensure adherence to the Western Australian Mental Health Act (2014), and actively contribute to the ongoing improvement of services in the region.
This position offers you the opportunity to work in an environment where you will develop a deeper understanding of mental health care within Aboriginal communities and gain exposure to a wide range of clinical cases.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a multidisciplinary mental health team in Broome, working across the Kimberley region.
  • Oversee the Psychiatry Liaison Nurse Service, ensuring comprehensive care for emergency department patients.
  • Provide clinical leadership and mentorship to junior staff, fostering professional development and maintaining high care standards.
  • Deliver culturally appropriate care, working closely with Aboriginal Liaison Officers.
  • Manage a diverse caseload, including first-episode psychosis, mood disorders, and substance use disorders.
The Kimberley Mental Health and Drug Service offers a multidisciplinary approach to mental health and substance use treatment. Based in Broome, the team provides services to people across the region, working with all age groups and diverse cultural backgrounds. Our facility, Mabu Liyan, is an acute psychiatric unit with 13 beds, delivering culturally safe care in close partnership with Aboriginal Mental Health teams and local community services.
The service also offers seven-day mental health liaison services to hospitals throughout the Kimberley, ensuring coordinated care across the region.
