Public Diplomacy & Policy Advisor Our client, the New Zealand High Commission in Fiji is seeking a qualified and experienced individual for the position of Public Diplomacy and Policy Advisor to lead and strengthen the High Commission’s public diplomacy presence in Fiji. The Public Diplomacy & Policy Adviser is responsible for developing and implementing the High Commission’s public diplomacy strategy and activities which seek to promote the interests of the New Zealand Government in Fiji. The position also assists with reporting on political and economic issues and is responsible for managing the High Commission Fund (community grant scheme). Public Diplomacy and Media Provide the High Commissioner and High Commission staff with communications advice to advance the High Commission and NZ, including public diplomacy objectives in Fiji. Work within the Ministry’s strategic framework to develop a public diplomacy and stakeholder engagement strategy for the High Commission. Manage the High Commission's public diplomacy policy and initiatives. Develop, implement and maintain an effective digital presence for the High Commission, including web pages and social media accounts. Be a point of contact for media enquiries and maintain existing media contacts by effectively networking and facilitating enquiries where possible. Assist with media liaison during NZ humanitarian responses to natural disasters, or crisis situations that involve New Zealanders or New Zealand interests, in conjunction with CMD and other relevant Ministry divisions and New Zealand agencies. Monitor, analyse and summarise media sources to stay informed on current events and developments relevant to the New Zealand Government’s bilateral and regional interests in Fiji. Manage media delegations accompanying official ministerial visits to Fiji. Manage media at High Commission events. Policy Advice With guidance from manager, and in coordination with seconded staff, identify, research, report, and provide advice on key political, social, economic/trade/defence/security and regional issues and emerging trends of interest/relevance to New Zealand. Effectively use and contribute to the post’s understanding of relationships that matter: decision-makers, policy-makers, thinkers and influencers in Fiji. Lead on and contribute to reporting on Fiji politics, parliamentary business, economy and elections. Support New Zealand staff as required on official calls and provincial travel, including preparing or delivering briefing/advice and reports as required. New Zealand High Commission Fund Manage the New Zealand High Commission Fund community grant scheme (with administrative support for the Development Team administrator) Internal communication Plan, facilitate, enable and champion the sharing of information about post activities with local and wider Ministry staff through internal channels. Relationship Management Develop and maintain contacts with Fiji within the Fiji media industry and with journalists. Develop and manage relationships with key decision-makers, development partners, policy-makers, and influencers in relevant sectors Organisational Responsibilities Ensure all Post policies and procedures are adhered to; Be aware of and adhere to health and safety policies and procedures; Contribute to High Commission projects and emergency responses. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE You must have the following qualifications, skills and experience: Technical skills A relevant tertiary qualification and/or previous work experience in a relevant industry. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Familiarity with social media, and interest in public relations and media. Political awareness and understanding of the representational role of an offshore mission. Able to build and maintain strong relationships and work collaboratively internally and externally Expert computer skills across a range of Microsoft products. Well-developed planning and organisational skills, including ability to prioritise tasks effectively, work under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining a clear focus on an overall plan. Ability to work autonomously and within guidelines, demonstrating sound judgement. People/networking skills Ability to build relationships and networks, both external and internal, and contact the right people at the right time to resolve issues in a timely manner. Experience of working with a wide range of people across cultural and social boundaries. Other Hold a current, clean driver’s licence.
