EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing and registration as a Nurse in the State of Michigan; OR
  • Registration as a Nurse in the State of Michigan and an accumulated total of two years of experience in a hospital, clinic or the military services, which includes an accumulated total of one year of experience in community or public health field nursing.
  • A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is also able to apply for this position; an employee with an LPN is paid at one grade LESS on the salary schedule.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license with access to a reliable vehicle throughout the course of employment.
  • In times of a public health emergency, may be required to report for specialized assigned duties inside or outside of Berrien County.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Thorough knowledge of nursing theory and clinical skills.
  • Solid understanding of state and local public health programs, relevant laws, and public health nursing practices.
  • Familiarity with communicable disease epidemiology and the ability to conduct investigations.
  • Good understanding of growth and development, with the ability to identify abnormalities.
  • Familiarity with medical protocols and clinical procedures.
  • Skilled in interpreting and explaining public health laws and regulations.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities in planning and delivering nursing care.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with clients, colleagues, healthcare professionals, community agencies, and the public.

Responsibilities
  • Delivers professional public health nursing services using assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation frameworks.
  • Promotes health among individuals, families, and communities through education, counseling, and preventive, therapeutic, and rehabilitative care.
  • Provides nursing services in homes and clinics, including immunizations, communicable disease control, lead poisoning prevention, adolescent health services, case management for children with special needs, WIC, nutrition education, and family planning.
  • Participates in the determination of priorities for nursing service according to identified community needs.
  • Collaborates with healthcare providers, social service agencies, and community members in regard to public health services.
  • Offers supportive care through active listening, client management, and referrals.
  • Maintains thorough documentation of interactions, follow-ups, and related activities.
  • Engages in ongoing professional development through conferences, workshops, and continued learning.
  • Conducts health risk assessments and applies problem-solving to address client needs.
