Overview The Public Safety Dispatcher is the first point of contact for individuals seeking emergency and non-emergency services. Dispatchers will receive initial calls for service and collaborate with responders using two-way radios, telephone, email and online portals to communicate with staff and emergency responders for a solution that best fits department and college policies and procedures. This person will provide customer service by triaging requests and providing the best solution. The Public Safety Dispatcher will document incoming requests, activities performed and dispositions of calls. Other duties may be assigned if deemed necessary by supervisors. This is a full-time 1.0 position. An example of the schedule 2pm-10pm Monday through Friday; subject to change. About The Department: The Department of Public Safety provides security services and emergency response on campus and develops and maintains the campus Emergency Operations Plan, a broad plan that establishes response protocol and a chain of command for emergencies that threaten the health and safety of the campus community or that disrupt its programs and activities. The plan covers emergencies ranging from natural disasters to terrorist attacks and conforms to state and federal regulations. The plan is reviewed and updated as situations, threats, and resources change. Responsibilities Monitors campus security cameras for irregular or unusual activities. Dispatch, communicate and assist officers throughout the call. Receives incoming requests for services. Determines and implements best course of action. Records pertinent information and activities. Assists community members with lost property, parking passes and general information. Trains, schedules and monitors student dispatchers Performs other administrative duties as assigned by management Engages in and promotes Macalester’s culture of diversity and inclusion, encompassing individuals of any heritage, identity, status or orientation. Qualifications Radio-telephone operations and procedures, understanding of policies and procedures of receiving and processing emergency calls, call screening techniques, phone etiquette, and communicating effectively in oral and written forms. Ability to problem solve, take decisive action, act under pressure, and effectively work with a variety of individuals from various socio- economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone. Must be able to understand detailed procedures that incorporate multiple campus divisions and departments. Ability to learn and to operate specialized computer systems/software, telephone, radio, and closed-circuit camera system.
