Description

The Municipal District of Bonnyville No. 87 invites applications for the position of Public Safety Peace Officer. The successful candidate will be responsible for enforcing Provincial Statutes and Municipal Bylaws by conducting proactive patrols throughout the M.D. of Bonnyville. Crime prevention, commercial vehicles, conventional traffic enforcement, animal complaints, and community engagement are at the core of our operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of three (3) years as a Police Officer, Alberta Peace Officer, or Level 1 Community Peace Officer with traffic enforcement authority or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Operator’s License in good standing.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certificate.
  • Experience conducting and enforcing traffic and commercial truck laws including moving violations and truck axle overweight.
  • Qualification in operating Radar/Lidar equipment is an asset.
  • Experience working with Alberta Provincial Statutes is an asset.
  • ASP baton, OC spray training within last 3 years.
  • Criminal record check/Vulnerable Sector Check conducted by the police of jurisdiction (proof required at time of interview).
  • Computer proficiency with ROADS, Microsoft Office, and MRF would be an asset.
  • Ability to deal effectively with complaint investigation, conflict resolution, and perform duties with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to deal with people in a fair manner, and to act with sound judgement under pressure.
  • Strong public relations, time management, and interpersonal communication skills are required.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) trained.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct highly visible patrols within the M.D. of Bonnyville to prevent and detect Municipal Bylaw and select Provincial Statute violations. Includes traffic patrol, commercial vehicle enforcement and rural crime prevention duties.
  • Conduct investigations, obtain statements, and compile and present reports.
  • Draft and process a range of charging documents, including but not limited to, municipal bylaw tickets and Provincial tickets.
  • Respond to various situations, including traffic stops and public complaints, while effectively articulating the rationale behind actions taken.
  • Inspect commercial vehicles, including gravel and oil haulers, to ensure safe operation, compliance with commercial vehicle safety regulations, and the protection of M.D. infrastructure
  • Conduct crime prevention patrols throughout the municipality to deter and detect crime. This may involve some extended working hours.
  • Perform various related tasks during a municipal emergency or disaster situation which may involve working extended or abnormal hours.
  • Utilize the in-car computer to generate reports, perform investigative searches, and access municipal software systems within the M.D. of Bonnyville.
  • Liaison with other local enforcement agencies.
  • Participate in, and/or provide security for, municipal events and functions as determined by administration.
  • Attend community functions and events as a representative of the department or municipality.
  • Conduct traffic control for emergency situations, parades, funeral processions, and other activities as required.
  • Maintain a high level of dress and deportment that will demonstrate a positive representation of the Public Safety department.
  • Perform other related duties within the scope of the position as required.
