SUMMARY

The Public Safety Specialist is a hybrid position that supports the overall mission of the Washington & Jefferson College Department of Campus & Public Safety by performing both communications (dispatch) and field security duties. This role serves as a primary point of contact for incoming calls and radio communications and conducts patrols to promote a safe campus environment. The Specialist monitors safety systems, coordinates emergency responses, and provides direct support to Campus Police Officers by assisting with non-law enforcement functions and duties.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, communications, or a related field preferred.
  • Prior experience in campus safety, security, or emergency communications preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure or emergency situations.
  • Familiarity with dispatch software, security monitoring systems, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required.
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and special events.
  • Must successfully pass a comprehensive criminal background investigation, a drug screening, and a medical evaluation as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

COMMUNICATIONS/ DISPATCH RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as the initial point of contact for telephone calls, radio transmissions, and in-person inquiries to the Department of Campus & Public Safety.
  • Receive, assess, and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatch personnel and coordinate response efforts accordingly.
  • Monitor and operate campus security systems including CCTV, fire alarms, intrusion alarms, and access control platforms.
  • Document all calls for service, incidents, and system activity accurately and thoroughly.
  • Maintain clear, professional communication in high-pressure and emergency situations.

FIELD/ PATROL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct routine foot and vehicle patrols of campus buildings, grounds, and parking areas.
  • Provide a visible security presence to deter unauthorized activity and enhance campus safety.
  • Unlock and lock buildings during scheduled hours, special events, and as needed.
  • Respond to service calls and incidents, including alarm activations, safety escorts, and facility-related issues.
  • Assist with safety and security operations during campus events, including athletic and social functions.
  • Complete written reports and maintain records related to patrol activities and incidents.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES

This position does not have any supervisory duties.
