Description Job Title: Public Services Librarian Grade: 5 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Reports to: Public Services Manager Direct Reports: None Last Updated: May 2024 SUMMARY OF ROLE Under the supervision of the Public Services Manager, Public Services Librarian provides a positive and welcoming experience for patrons and assists with their information needs through excellent customer service that enhances their library experience. The Public Services Librarian engages with the community through programs, collections and services that meet patron needs and facilitate their use of library services. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES Conduct reference interviews to identify and fulfill the information needs of patrons through use of available resources, including referrals to other agencies where appropriate. Instruct and guide patrons in the use of library resources, including resolving technology issues when accessing library resources Collection Management responsibilities for assigned areas and participation in our Collection Management Committee Participate in the development, delivery and evaluation of programs, services and other activities that meet the needs of people of diverse backgrounds and interests Engage with the community through participation in outreach/inreach events, organizations, groups, and other initiatives in order to inform the development of library programs, collections and services. Promote awareness, interest and use of the collection and services. Participate in community-wide associations and development opportunities for the purpose of generating potential new services Act as Person-in-Charge. Interpret and enforce library policies and procedures and resolve customer concerns. Other responsibilities and duties as assigned KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of current library theories, issues, practices, and trends Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, vendors and the public Ability to exercise effective and appropriate judgment and independent decision-making Ability to remain calm and resolve issues in difficult situations Problem solving skills to assist in determining priorities and finding timely solutions to patron concerns Ability to adapt and respond positively to changing work situations and environments Ability to use good judgment to prioritize tasks to solve problems and produce accurate work in a timely manner Adept at operating a personal computer, PC applications, and electronic resources as used in libraries Familiarity with new and emerging technologies used in libraries and ability to learn and assist others with them Ability to interpret library policies, objectives and services for community groups, educational leaders, other organizations, and the general public Proficient use of business English, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and concepts to communicate effectively in a variety of formats Requirements MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Master of Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent work experience At least one (1) year of work experience in a public service environment Experience working in a public library preferred Commitment to continuous improvement and self-directed learning WORKING CONDITIONS Primarily works in a standard, office workstation environment requiring extensive periods of sitting, using a computer keyboard, and reading a computer monitor. Frequently moves between different areas of the library to provide customer service Occasional work outdoors (Farmer’s Market, Outreach events, etc.) Occasional bending, lifting, reaching or push/pull up to 100 pounds and lift to 25 pounds Occasional travel to meetings, training, or offsite work within the La Grange service area and across Illinois that requires access to regular, reliable transportation Opportunity for some hybrid work and schedule flexibility This position requires regular evening and weekends
