About the Role We are seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and forward-thinking individual to join our growing China-based publishing team, managing an international portfolio of journals in the fields of Mathematics and Computer Science. This Publisher role sits within the Physical Sciences team, part of Elsevier’s Science, Technology & Medical Journals (STMJ) Publishing Organisation. You will take full publishing responsibility for a defined portfolio of journals, working with editors, authors, and stakeholders around the world, while collaborating closely with colleagues in China and across Elsevier’s global publishing network. Alongside day-to-day portfolio management, you will contribute to wider projects and initiatives that help shape and strengthen the portfolio. You will combine scientific understanding with an entrepreneurial mindset, bringing curiosity, commercial awareness, and a keen interest in developments across the scholarly publishing landscape. Responsibilities Shape and grow the portfolio Set and deliver the strategic direction for a portfolio of journals in Mathematics and Computer Science. Partner with Editors-in-Chief and Editorial Boards to drive journal performance, relevance, and impact. Ensure a strong flow of high-quality submissions by engaging actively with editors, authors, reviewers, and the wider research community. Evolve the portfolio in line with market trends, including Open Access developments. Own key performance outcomes, including content growth, editorial speed, market position, and author and editor satisfaction. Oversee the portfolio’s editorial budget, managing it in line with strategic priorities and evolving portfolio needs. Build strong relationships Develop trusted relationships with external stakeholders, including editors, societies, academics, and industry partners. Work closely with internal teams across editorial, production, marketing, publishing, and technology to deliver on portfolio priorities. Spot what’s next Identify emerging market needs and commercial opportunities. Contribute to the development and, where appropriate, acquisition of new journals, products, and services, including society journals and conferences. Requirements Attitude: A proactive, curious, and solutions-focused mindset. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to influence and collaborate. Commercial awareness and comfort working with data to inform decisions. The ability to work independently while being a supportive, engaged team member. An understanding of the research and scholarly publishing ecosystem and its evolving needs. Willingness to travel internationally. Education and experience: A university degree (essential). At least two years’ experience in journal publishing, or equivalent relevant industry or postdoctoral experience (desirable). Fluency in English (essential).
