Job Description The Publishing Director leads the strategic development and commercial success of one of our STEM portfolios, driving growth across multiple business models while ensuring excellence in research dissemination. This senior leadership position combines strategic portfolio management with deep market expertise to shape the future of academic publishing. Key Accountabilities: Strategic Leadership and Portfolio Management Develop and execute comprehensive 3-year business plans to drive portfolio growth, with direct accountability for article volumes and revenue targets across multiple business models. Identify and pursue opportunities for portfolio expansion through new journal launches/merges, sections and acquisitions Report regularly on progress against key performance indicators and strategic objectives Lead strategic initiatives in Open Research aligned with portfolio requirements. With the Editorial Development team oversee the development and maintenance of society relationships in collaboration to drive portfolio growth through new acquisitions and successful contract renewals. Proactively identify and capitalize on market opportunities through data-driven decision-making Stay ahead of industry trends and competitor activities to inform product development and innovation Ensure portfolio alignment with commercial roadmaps and market demand Develop and execute strategies to monetize content while maintaining market relevance Team Leadership Lead and develop a high performing global team across multiple time zones ensuring regional requirements are met by our teams Design and deliver annual workforce plans to ensure optimal resource allocation and to ensure talent attraction, development and retention in appropriate geographic locations. Mentor and coach Executive Publishers to drive consistent and highly effective performance management and development Foster cross-functional collaboration with Leadership, Editorial Development, Ethics, and Commercial teams Cross functional collaboration Work with Leadership and Operational Excellence colleagues to optimize service delivery Collaborate with Editorial Development, Publishing Ethics and Integrity and Performance and Planning team to drive continuous improvement and business growth Partner with marketing teams to promote portfolio growth initiatives Work closely with our commercial teams to adjust the portfolio to best match commercial roadmaps – ensure commercial have keen oversight of the development of the portfolio Contribute to company-wide strategic initiatives in Researcher Services Keep abreast of global changes to the process of monetising content, to ensure program remains relevant, commercially viable and in pace with market dynamics Qualifications The ideal candidate will have experience of: Proven track record in strategic management of a £50m+ profit center Comprehensive understanding of academic publishing business models and market dynamics Deep knowledge of research funder policies and institutional buying patterns Extensive subject area expertise and understanding of key customer needs Advanced financial analysis and business planning capabilities Demonstrated success in stakeholder management and driving innovation Skills and Behaviours Required Strategic mindset with strong decision-making capabilities Excellence in business results optimization Superior influencing and communication abilities Strong commercial acumen and customer focus Proven leadership and team development skills Driving Continuous Improvement Creativity and Change Management Willing to manage globally with teams to east and west of own location Advanced numerical and verbal reasoning abilities Exceptional relationship-building capabilities Willingness to travel on a frequent and global basis to engage with customers and team. Additional Information We believe that great things happen when people connect face-to-face. That's why we work in-person with each other, or with customers and partners, three days a week or more. When you’re not spending time together in one of our offices or other workplaces – like at conference – you get the flexibility and support to work from home or remotely. Our Milton Park office will be relocating to Oxford city centre in late 2027 / early 2028, offering an exciting new workplace in the heart of the city. The successful candidate will be able to utilise our balanced working model. We ask that candidates live within a commutable distance of our offices to ensure that as a balanced worker they can make it to our office locations to collaborate as required. There is an expectation for a minimum of 3 days per week in-person time with at least one day per week spent in our office in Milton Park, Oxfordshire. The remainder of your in-person time can be spent in either Milton Park or Colchester.
