Note: Eligibility for benefits may vary by location and is determined by employment status Job Summary / Responsibilities: Under general supervision, administers pulmonary function tests and calculates/records test results for interpretation by medical staff. Performs sweat tests and participates in bronchoscopies/conscience sedation procedures as required. Operates pulmonary function laboratory equipment. Performs routine preventative maintenance, daily calibration, and quality control procedures on laboratory equipment. Follows all applicable infection control policies and procedures with regard to patients and laboratory equipment. Schedules patients for pulmonary function testing. Reads and interprets physician's orders for tests and follows established protocol regarding the events of those tests. Confers with patients to explain treatment and breathing procedures in order to allay fears and elicit maximum cooperation, effort and performance. Recognizes invalid data or gross technical problems and brings these to the immediate attention of the manager. Recognizes any significant changes in a patient's condition during testing and takes appropriate action according to the policy and procedure manual. Performs arterial punctures for collection of arterial blood gases and analyzes blood samples with a blood gas analyzer. Participates in continuing education program and department meetings as required. Responds to and participates in Code Blue emergencies in the pulmonary function laboratory. Participates in departmental/hospital in-services as required. 1. Graduate of an AMA approved respiratory therapist program or cardiopulmonary technologist program. 2. Credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care as one of the following: Registered Respiratory Therapist with MI licensure. CPFT or RPFT. 3. Two years of on-the-job training in a pulmonary function laboratory performing the full array of pulmonary function tests. 4. One year experience assisting with bronchoscopies and conscience sedation. 5. CPR trained and BLS certified.
