Thomas Fresh is a leading Canadian wholesaler/packager of fresh produce with locations in Calgary, Surrey and Saskatoon.
Thomas Fresh currently has an opening for a Purchasing Lead (Maternity Leave Coverage) who will be responsible for developing and executing purchasing strategies, tracking metrics to reduce expenses, negotiating deals, managing inventory and negotiating costing with vendors. This is a temporary position to cover a maternity leave for a period of 9 to 12 months.
The Purchasing Lead ensures clear requirements, forecasts market trends and business needs, mitigates risks, and collaborates with stakeholders across multiple locations. Strong leadership, negotiation, vendor management and analytical skills are requirements of the role, as is a strong understanding of purchasing software and processes.
2–5 years of purchasing experience in a production business is preferred. Experience in packaging buying would be considered a plus, as would a post-secondary education. Ensuring our vendors provide sustainable packaging options is a key element of the role.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, lead and execute purchasing strategies across multiple spend categories and locations.
  • Perform cost analysis and benchmark optimal inventory levels across business-critical items.
  • Monitor business needs ensuring consistent supply during peak periods.
  • Maintain and enhance current, long-term vendor relationships while sourcing new vendor opportunities as needed. Ensure the business is getting the best product and service in the most cost-efficient manner.
  • Be aware of any quality defects from vendors and rectify in a timely manner.
  • Weekly cycle count inventories and monthly inventory balancing.
  • Inform key stakeholders of new items, supply gaps, supply opportunities, etc.
  • Stay current on new equipment technologies that deliver operational efficiencies.
