POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Pursuits Design Manager (Mechanical Construction) is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of project pursuits, from early engagement through to final submission. This includes preparing accurate cost estimates, developing GMP budgets, and driving proposal development for a wide range of mechanical construction projects. The Pursuits Design Manager leverages a Design Assist approach to ensure estimates are aligned with client requirements and project objectives, with a strong focus on collaboration and innovation. This role involves leading pursuit meetings and design sessions with stakeholders including architects, engineers, consultants, and owners, while ensuring that Symtech delivers complete, competitive, and compelling proposals with no scope gaps. The Pursuits Design Manager works closely with internal estimating, operations, and business development teams to ensure pricing, technical solutions, and value engineering opportunities are integrated into every submission.

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, & SKILLS:

  • Advanced expertise with AutoBid
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, design specifications, and bid documents.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple pursuits under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a professional and client-focused demeanor.
  • Ability to lead teams, coordinate group work, and supervise pursuit/estimating staff.
  • Skilled at preparing complex proposals with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify risks, propose solutions, and deliver competitive and complete submissions.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities, with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Minimum 5 years of mechanical estimating experience in ICI (Industrial, Commercial, Institutional) and Infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of Mechanical (plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, etc.) systems.
  • Proven experience leading project pursuits, preparing complex proposals, and engaging with clients and consultants.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • A combination of training, education, and relevant work experience may be considered equivalent.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the pursuit lifecycle for mechanical construction projects, including P3, IPD, Design-Build, and Design Assist delivery models.
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates, budgets, and proposals using Autobid and other estimating software.
  • Develop and validate GMP costs while ensuring scope completeness and alignment with client requirements.
  • Facilitate and participate in pursuit meetings with architects, engineers, and owners during preconstruction phases.
  • Drive stakeholder engagement to ensure clarity of scope, design intent, and commercial approach.
  • Identify and communicate Value Engineering solutions that enhance competitiveness and client value.
  • Coordinate and oversee estimating teams, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and timely delivery of pricing submissions.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of estimating tools, processes, and pricing strategies.
  • Collaborate with business development and operations to align pursuit efforts with Symtech’s strategic goals.
  • Represent Symtech in client meetings, presentations, and debriefs as required.
