YOUR TECHNICAL SKILLS

As the QA Engineering Manager, you’ll need a solid technical foundation to guide your team and align with engineering priorities. Key technical skills include:

  • Quality Engineering Expertise: Deep understanding of test automation, performance testing, and reliability engineering principles.
  • Test Automation: Expertise in building and implementing automated testing frameworks (e.g., Selenium, Appium, or equivalent) within CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab CI).
  • Testing Tools: Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as Selenium, JMeter, LoadRunner, or equivalent, and experience overseeing their implementation.
  • Frameworks & CI/CD: Knowledge of designing and integrating testing frameworks into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps).
  • Testing Methodologies: Deep understanding of acceptance testing (Level 5 - BPTS) and methods/tools adoption (Level 5 - METL)
  • Programming & Scripting: Working knowledge of languages like Python, Java, or JavaScript to support technical discussions and framework development.
  • Software Development Lifecycles: Strong grasp of Agile, DevOps, and modern software engineering practices.
  • Cloud Technologies: Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS) and their application in testing environments.
  • Metrics & Reporting: Ability to use business data and quality metrics to evaluate outcomes and drive continuous improvement.
  • Technology Trends: Awareness of emerging technologies and their application to QA, ensuring compliance with cybersecurity and information management policies.

Support office roles will be headquartered across McKell, Parramatta and Gosford. We will consider role headquarters outside of the above locations where the role can reasonably be performed from that location taking into consideration the operational, financial and customer requirements of the role, and an ability to attend a NSW Government workplace as required. At the point an employee is notified of our intention to assign them to a role, the relevant leader will discuss headquarter options.
Salary Service NSW Grade 11/12, with the base salary for this role starting at $157569 base plus superannuation

ABOUT THE ROLE

The QA Engineering Manager is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the entire Quality Engineering function within Service NSW Digital. Reporting directly to the Head of Engineering, you will lead the delivery of specialised quality assurance (QA) solutions – spanning automation, performance, usability, and functionality testing – to ensure our digital products meet strategic business needs and deliver exceptional experiences to NSW citizens and businesses.
This role is critical to elevating product quality by providing expertise, shared resources, and efficient testing infrastructure. You will lead a team focused on test automation, performance, and product testing, promoting collaboration across the organisation to deliver exceptional digital experiences. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

  • Define and drive the overarching QA strategy, ensuring alignment with Service NSW’s objectives and engineering priorities.
  • Lead, manage, and inspire a team of QA professionals, including a QA Lead and QA engineers.
  • Collaborate with product and engineering leadership to integrate quality practices into development lifecycles and ensure consistent standards across all digital products.
  • Lead the design and delivery of automated testing frameworks and performance test solutions within a CI/CD environment, driving efficiencies and quality outcomes.
  • Monitor and report on quality metrics, providing actionable insights to senior leadership to enhance product outcomes.
  • Build a culture of continuous improvement, championing best practices in quality engineering and developer experience (DevEx).
  • Champion QA best practices, including test tool selection, data preparation, and standards, to enhance delivery speed and system reliability.
  • Oversee testing in complex and dynamic environments, ensuring automated tests meet tight timeframes, changing priorities, and resource constraints.
  • Act as an escalation point for complex quality issues, ensuring timely resolution and knowledge sharing across teams.
  • Provide strategic input into resource allocation, vendor contracts, and budgets, ensuring value for money and compliance.
