The Department of Psychiatry in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Qualitative Research Lead. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The position reports to the Principal Investigator with support from the senior leadership team.
This position will be based out of the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research & Education at the University of Calgary - Foothills Campus, and involves working with government and community-based non-profit agencies across the province. The Qualitative Research Lead is a highly skilled qualitative researcher with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, concepts, technical aspects and practices essential to directing and analysing community-based research projects. The Qualitative Research Lead’s role will be multifaceted and include initiating and directing research activities as well as interacting with investigators, and stakeholders (including service providers, families, and youth), from various communities in Alberta.
The focus of this position is mainly to support the qualitative approaches of the research project and also require travel to community sites across the province.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Planning & Development:

• Leads, manages, and participates in project as assigned
• Defines project objectives, scope, implementation plans, resource requirements, and timelines
• Designs and manages all assigned phases of project and program
• Leads the day-to-day operational aspects of research, including identifying and resolving issues and conflicts

Planning:

• Leads the development and implementation of research planning and development processes
• Organizes meetings, committees, locations, agendas, goals and next steps
• Works collaboratively with the different committees to determine priorities, establish goals and objectives, develop and implement action plans, identify performance measures/targets, and monitor/evaluate progress toward performance targets

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

• Master’s or PhD degree in social sciences, psychology or related discipline with a focus on applied research
• At least 5 years of experience conducting research in social science or mental health settings, preferably applied research specific to community health
• Demonstrated experience in qualitative or mixed methods analytic approaches
• Experience with transcription, coding, analysis, and interpretation of qualitative interview or focus group data is an asset
• Knowledge of mental health/addiction care and understanding of health care
• Demonstrated experience working with children, youth, and families
• Must possess above-average interpersonal and communication skills
• Demonstrated experience liaising and working with internal and external research partners, such as governments, community agencies, and non-profits
• Superior leadership skills, including demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making responsibilities, coaching and teaching, and the ability to motivate, inspire and build confidence in others to achieve common goals
• Self-directed, enthusiastic and honest in performance of duties
• Ability to manage time effectively and determine priorities as well as delegate tasks appropriately
• Knowledgeable in writing medical/scientific research protocols
• Experience in writing medical/scientific literature for publication
• Knowledge translation and exchange experience is an asset
• Ability to travel within Alberta
• A valid Class 5 Driver’s license with proven good driving record (abstract required) and ability to use own personal vehicle for travel is required
