Description

Our client, a global OEM of mining equipment and mining operational technology, is seeking an experienced Quality Assurance Engineer – Test Automation to join its Brisbane-based software product development team.

You’ll join a specialist engineering team responsible for developing shared software components, automation frameworks and tools that improve the efficiency, consistency and quality of software delivery across a large, globally distributed product development organisation.

The team supports the development of sophisticated mining operational technology used around the world, including fleet management, asset tracking, equipment health, safety and increasingly autonomous mining operations.

Unlike a traditional QA role focused on testing individual product features, this position places a strong emphasis on test automation engineering, reusable frameworks, shared tooling and continuous improvement of software delivery practices.

The role is an initial 12-month contract with strong potential for extension. You will be required to work from the Brisbane office 5 days per week, although there is flexibility around start and finish times.

The Role Working closely with Software Engineers, QA Engineers and other development teams, you will help design, develop and maintain automated testing solutions and shared tools that support quality and efficiency across multiple software development teams.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, developing and maintaining automated testing frameworks, tools and reusable test components
  • Building and maintaining automated tests across UI, API and backend services
  • Developing and enhancing automation solutions using Playwright, TypeScript/JavaScript and Cucumber/BDD
  • Supporting automated testing of REST APIs, including error handling and role-based access control
  • Integrating and optimising automated testing within CI/CD pipelines
  • Developing shared testing utilities and frameworks that can be adopted by multiple software development teams
  • Improving the reliability, maintainability and performance of automated test suites
  • Investigating automation failures, troubleshooting defects and improving test stability
  • Supporting test environment readiness and test data management
  • Applying sound software engineering principles and design patterns to test automation development
  • Collaborating with engineering teams to identify opportunities for greater automation and improved delivery efficiency
  • Promoting shift-left testing, continuous integration and modern quality engineering practices
  • Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives across the software development lifecycle

What We're Looking For

We're looking for an experienced QA Automation Engineer or Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) with strong hands-on experience developing automation solutions within a modern software engineering environment.

Ideally, you will have:

  • 4+ years' experience in QA Automation, Software Testing, SDET or a similar software engineering role, with substantial hands-on automation experience
  • Strong practical experience with Playwright and TypeScript/JavaScript
  • Experience with Cucumber / Behaviour-Driven Development (BDD)
  • Experience with Java
  • Strong experience designing, developing and maintaining automated testing frameworks and reusable automation components
  • Hands-on experience testing REST APIs
  • Experience integrating automated testing into GitHub Actions or other CI/CD technologies
  • Good programming skills and an understanding of software engineering principles, including maintainable code and design patterns
  • Experience troubleshooting complex automated test failures and improving test reliability
  • Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle and Agile delivery
  • Experience working collaboratively with software engineering teams to improve development and testing processes
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Australian or New Zealand citizenship, or Australian Permanent Residency
  • Ability to work from the Brisbane office 5 days per week

Experience with some of the following would be highly regarded:

  • Developing shared automation frameworks or testing tools used across multiple development teams
  • Page Object Model or similar maintainable automation design patterns
  • Building internal developer tools, testing utilities or reusable software components
  • Experience with complex, distributed or enterprise-scale software platforms
  • Improving automated test execution performance and CI/CD pipeline efficiency
  • Mining, industrial or operational technology environments

Previous mining industry experience is not essential. Strong software test automation engineering skills are the priority for this position.

Why Consider This Opportunity? This is an opportunity to work within a specialist engineering team focused on improving software development and delivery through automation, shared tooling and reusable components.

Rather than concentrating exclusively on testing individual software features, you'll contribute to solutions that can improve quality, consistency and efficiency across multiple product development teams.

You'll be part of a collaborative, globally distributed software engineering organisation developing sophisticated technology used by major mining operations around the world.

Location: Brisbane CBD

Contract: Initial 12 months, with strong potential for extension

Office: 5 days per week

Working Hours: Flexible start and finish times

If you're an experienced QA Automation Engineer or SDET with strong programming skills and a passion for developing automation frameworks and improving software delivery, we'd like to hear from you.
