Job Summary
The Quality Control Manager & Food Safety Coordinator will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining quality assurance and food safety programs across all farm operations. This includes monitoring post-harvest handling, storage, and transportation processes to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and customer requirements.
Responsibilities
Quality Control
- Oversee quality checks throughout the harvesting, sorting, grading, and packing processes.
- Develop and maintain SOPs for handling, storage, and transportation to minimize bruising and defects.
- Supervise Quality Control staff.
- Conduct routine inspections to ensure product consistency and adherence to quality standards.
- Analyze trends in product defects and implement corrective actions.
- Collaborate with production and packing teams to ensure continuous improvement.
Food Safety Coordination
- Develop and maintain food safety plans compliant with Canada GAP
- Conduct internal audits and prepare for external audits
- Maintain records for traceability, sanitation logs, and corrective actions.
- Lead employee training programs related to hygiene, safety, and proper handling procedures.
- Serve as the point of contact for all food safety-related matters, including customer inquiries and regulatory inspections.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Post-secondary education in Food Science, Agriculture, Environmental Health, or a related discipline is preferred but not required.
Equivalent experience in the agri-food sector will also be considered.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in quality assurance or food safety, preferably within the fresh produce or farming industry.
- Knowledge of Canadian food safety regulations including Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR), Canada GAP, HACCP, and
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards.
- Experience with Canada GAP certification or similar third-party audit schemes an asset
Preferred Skills
- Understanding of traceability systems and documentation practices required under Canadian regulations.
- Ability to conduct internal audits and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Comfortable working in bilingual environments; English is required, and Spanish is considered an asset.
- Proficient in using Microsoft Office and digital record-keeping systems.
Work Environment
- Work will take place in both field and packing/storage facility environments.
- Flexibility to work extended hours during peak harvest periods.
- Must be able to lift 40 lbs and work in varying weather conditions.
