Description

Quality Controllers aim to ensure that the product or service an organisation provides is fit for purpose, is consistent and meets both external and internal requirements. This includes legal compliance and customer expectations.
As a quality controller, you’ll coordinate the activities required to meet these quality standards.
Your role is concerned with monitoring and advising on the performance of the quality management system, producing data and reporting on performance, measuring against set standards.

Responsibilities

Quality Controllers work across many industries and sectors. You may work as either a generalist or specialist. You’ll use a variety of measures and management systems, such as total quality management, to carry out your role.

Your responsibilities will vary depending on the sector you work in. However, as a quality controller you’ll typically need to:

  • devise and establish a company’s quality procedures, standards and specifications
  • review customer requirements and make sure they are met
  • work with purchasing staff to establish quality requirements from external suppliers
  • set standards for quality as well as health and safety
  • make sure that manufacturing or production processes meet international and national standards
  • look at ways to reduce waste and increase efficiency
  • define quality procedures in conjunction with operating staff
  • set up and maintain controls and documentation procedures
  • monitor performance by gathering relevant data and produce statistical reports
  • review existing policies and make suggestions for changes and improvements and how to implement them
  • measure performance and identify any areas of weakness, recommending and implementing improvements
  • assess the effectiveness of changes made
  • use relevant quality tools and make sure managers and other staff understand how to improve the business
  • make sure the company is working as effectively as possible to keep up with competitors
  • modify existing products and processes and develop new ones
  • check and improve safety and quality control procedures in your own and suppliers’ factories, from the raw material stage through to the finished product
  • research current consumer markets and latest technologies to develop new product concepts
  • select raw materials and other ingredients from suppliers
  • prepare product costings based on raw materials and manufacturing costs to ensure profitable products
  • audit suppliers or manage internal audits
  • run trials of new products - either alongside or together with product development
  • coordinate launches of new products
  • deal with any customer complaint investigations or product issues
  • compile, check and approve product specifications and labelling
  • undertake long-term projects with other departments, such as reducing waste by improving efficiency
  • work on packaging innovation and technology
  • conduct experiments and produce sample products
  • design the processes and machinery for making products with a consistent flavour, colour and texture in large quantities
  • build relationships with suppliers and customers
  • ensure products are profitable.
