JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: Special Education Personal Care Teacher Assistant (PCTA)
JOB GOAL: To assist school staff in meeting individualized student and program needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One year of college required; two years of college preferred.
  • Physical condition so as to be able to manage behavior/physically challenged students; must have the ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Interest in and exposure with students with disabilities.
  • Basic understanding of child growth and development.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Principal or Director of Special Education/Designee may find appropriate or acceptable.
    REPORTS TO: Principal or Designee

THIS POSITION IS INDIVIDUALIZED DUE TO UNIQUE NEEDS OF STUDENTS AND PROGRAMS. DIRECTION OF THE PCTA IS PROVIDED BY THE SPECIAL EDUCATION COORDINATOR OR SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER.

  • Demonstrate ethical behavior and maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Current restraint program certification.
  • Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Implement student behavior plans.
  • Awareness of identified student health concerns, monitor/assist as appropriate in collaboration with teacher and nurse.
  • Toileting/personal care/hygiene, when necessary.
  • Awareness of student-assistance protocol.
  • Assist with collecting, maintaining, and organizing data and portfolios, and/or work samples of student(s).
  • Assist student(s) with organization of desk, homework, class work and materials.
  • Assist special education teacher with implementation of student academic plans.
  • When applicable, consult daily with teachers and other service providers.
  • Facilitate student(s) social interaction.
  • Support student(s) inclusion in the general education setting as consistent with student’s IEP.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Principal or Director of Special Education.
    JOB ENVIRONMENT: PreK-12 School
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Include frequent standing, walking, stooping, climbing,
    bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 50 pounds; and possible exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases, depending on specific assignment.
