This position will require candidate to work at-sea &/or remote location (5-7 trips per year). Remote-site and/or at-sea operations for field testing and experiments for up to 30 days at a time.

DESCRIPTION

The Marine Physical Laboratory Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is seeking a Research and Development Engineer 1. Must be flexible to work 50% to 100% time.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. in Electrical, Mechanical, Ocean, or Aerospace Engineering (with suitable ME experience and education), or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering principles and methods in order to independently perform professional engineering design work of limited scope and complexity.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering principles and methods to perform entry-level professional engineering functions. Skills to repair and troubleshoot electronics and processing components for oceanographic systems.
  • Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of the field.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of electronic test equipment including spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, etc.
  • Knowledge of the fundamental techniques in low level program language(C), object-oriented programming (C++, Python).
  • Demonstrated experience assisting with the design of equipment and incorporating the design into a multi-functional system designed by several engineers.
  • Familiarity with schematic capture and PCB layout fundamentals
  • Demonstrated fundamental concepts with the physics of data acquisition and sensor behavior (piezoelectric transducers, DSP boards, low noise sensor design). Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of programming mathematical packages for data analysis using Matlab.
  • Analytical skills, and strong skills in attention to detail.
  • Under direction, assist in shipboard operations including over-the-side deployment of oceanographic equipment.
  • Analytical and judgment skills to conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate with technical and scientific personnel.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner. Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to create and maintain documentation of system design and operation
  • Fundamental knowledge of power and battery systems management
