OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The salary for this role is £40,609 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected for 3 days a week, however, we actively support requests for flexible working.
This role is to be based at the following site; Culham, Oxfordshire.
This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.

THE ROLE

The Technology Development Group, a part of the Fusion Technology (FT) division, spearheads projects to efficiently advance technologies through the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) stages. The group possess the expertise to develop requirement sets for new test rigs and facilities tailored to experimental and operator needs. Additionally, the group has the capability to conduct high heat flux testing on small-scale test samples.

As Research and Development ( R&D) Engineer, you will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary team on UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA)’s £200 million Lithium Breeding Tritium Innovation (LIBRTI) programme, a pioneering breeding blanket test facility project, liaising with potential users of the facility to develop test plans and requirements, researching existing experiment sensor technologies and developing novel sensor solutions, and supporting subsystem optioneering.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supporting definition of testing goals, requirements by delivering systems engineering artefacts (interface documents, systems requirements documents, Verification & Validation (V&V) plans, test plans).
  • Integration of physical and digital streams, defining physical testing activities and priorities to support development of the digital twin of the test facility.
  • Perform engineering calculations and basic simulations to develop initial test facility requirement ranges.
  • Collaborating with stakeholders (including universities, public sector research establishments and industry in fusion and related fields) to elicit requirement and identify R&D needs.
