Description As SHINE continues the journey towards full scale production, the Radiation Protection Specialist will have direct responsibilities to implement activities related to Radiation Protection programs and facilities to control on-site personnel doses ALARA and limit the public’s exposure to radiation. The base salary range for this position is $65,000 - $90,000 per year plus a comprehensive compensation package. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Duties and Responsibilities: At the Discretion of the SHINE Radiation Protection Manager, the Health Physics / Radiation Protection Specialist scope may include but is not limited to: Work with the Radiation Protection Manager and Radiation Safety Officer to establish and implement radiation protection department policies, programs, and procedures. Recommend process and design changes that improve radiological safety. Assist in the development of Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and State of WI license applications and amendments. Assist in the development of sound radiological practices around research and development work. Maintain radiation detection instrumentation, and other associated equipment. Maintain dosimetry program (internal/external) Estimate and track individual and collective dose Perform shielding calculations Analyze and interpret the results of surveys and analyses and recommend appropriate radiation protection controls and actions. Provide briefings and guidance to facility personnel to prevent unplanned exposures and maintain exposures ALARA. Write Radiation Work Permits and Work Instructions Mentor Radiation Protection Technicians and Authorized Users in good Health Physics practices. Monitor radiological safety and compliance with applicable radiological regulations Perform radiation and contamination surveys and decontamination work. Perform sampling and analysis of gases, liquids, and solids. Perform other duties as requested or assigned. Requirements Experience handling tritium preferred Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in applied radiation protection or related field. Associate’s degree in health physics, relevant engineering technology, or related physical science specialty; or High School Diploma with ANSI RP technician qualifications and experience at a nuclear power facility; or Navy Nuclear experience. including Engineering Lab Technician (ELT) qualifications. National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT preferred) Supervisory or Radiation Safety Officer experience preferred Bachelor’s degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, relevant engineering technology, or related physical science specialty preferred Certified Health Physics (CHP) or National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT) preferred. Technical understanding of nuclear facility principles and operation. Familiarity with federal regulatory requirements regarding radiation protection. Strong PC skills to include Microsoft software. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Eligibility for employment is conditioned on the applicant’s ability to qualify for access to information subject to U.S. Export Controls. Additionally, applicant’s eligibility may be conditioned based upon meeting the Nuclear Regulatory Commission requirements for access to Safeguards Information, which typically requires a pre-employment drug screen, fingerprinting and criminal background check.
