Description

SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for the safe operation of the RAD Safety Aliquot Laboratory and will distribute aliquots of RAD Safety controlled samples to support the laboratory’s ALARA program. The duties of this position represent routine procedures that are carried out independently.

TYPICAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalent with some related work experience. A background in chemistry and math is desirable. Associates or bachelor’s degree in a science field and/or prior experience as a RAD Safety Technician or Engineering Laboratory Technician are a plus.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrates the ability to distinguish and apply appropriate decontamination methods and techniques in a variety of applications
  • Demonstrates an understanding of radiological parameters to include units of radioactivity, dose and exposure, radioactive decay and half-life
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to multi-task with good time management skills
  • Employs meticulous attention to detail
  • Proficient in most Microsoft Office applications
  • Must be able to perform basic (and some advanced) mathematical calculations

  • Mobility to work in a lab and office setting
  • Use of standard office and lab equipment and stamina to sit or stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects

Work is performed in a laboratory setting, which is subject to chemicals, and potential fumes, gasses, noxious odors, and related items typical for this environment.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING:

  • Responsible for safe operation, storage, and maintenance of RAD Safety-controlled material and samples
  • Responsible for full operations of the RAD Safety Aliquot Lab including use of glove boxes for sample aliquot operations
  • Performs routine and situational radiation and contamination surveys
  • Performs radiological decontamination on equipment and facilities as directed by the RSO [RAD Safety Officer]
  • Operates and checks the daily functionality of the RAD Safety Group’s portable instrument inventory
  • May perform other radiation safety functions as directed by the RSO
  • Conducts all activities in a safe and efficient manner
  • Demonstrates and supports core values of GEL
