• Use machines like X-rays, CT (computed tomography), MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), fluoroscopy, and mammography.
• Ensure equipment is properly calibrated and maintained.
• Explain procedures to patients and answer any questions.
• Position patients correctly to ensure optimal image quality while minimizing radiation exposure.
• Use protective devices to shield parts of the patient’s body not being imaged.
• Adhere strictly to radiation safety regulations (ALARA: As Low As Reasonably Achievable).
• Check for contraindications (e.g., pregnancy, metal implants before MRI).
• Monitor patients during procedures for signs of discomfort or adverse reactions.
• Assess the quality of images to determine if additional views are necessary.
• Ensure images meet diagnostic standards before submission to radiologists.
• Maintain accurate patient records.
• Input data into radiology information systems (RIS) or picture archiving and communication systems (PACS).
• Assist in scheduling appointments and managing workflow.
• Work closely with radiologists, doctors, nurses, and other allied health staff.
• Communicate findings or concerns that need urgent attention.
• Keep up to date with advances in radiographic techniques and technology.
• Participate in training, workshops, and continuing education.

Depending on their qualifications and work setting, radiographers may also:

• Administer contrast media under supervision.
• Perform interventional procedures.
• Assist in radiation therapy planning
