Description
Purpose/Job Function: The Rate Specialist is primarily responsible for evaluating, interpreting, and entering client freight rate information into several computer programs and investigating discrepancies, rating, auditing, and reviewing claims. In addition, this role is responsible to uphold our core values: Ethics, Engagement, and Excellence.  Essential Functions: * Read, evaluate, understand, and interpret basic freight rate contracts. * Comprehend carrier pricing, rules tariff, contract rates, and NMFC/Commodity identification for true cost of items shipped. * Have knowledge of standards, rate orders, and classification rating guides to enter necessary rate information into our proprietary rate system. * Verify freight rates against actual bills once entered for accuracy. * Work directly with other departments to obtain clarification when necessary. * Efficiently use our proprietary task-tracking tool. * Research contract discrepancies against freight bills. * Work directly with carriers and clients to obtain clarification when necessary. * Communicate with internal staff and customers via phone, email, and in person. * Assist team members and performs other incidental and related duties are required and assigned. Qualification/Requirements: * Customer focus skills * Communication proficiency and thoroughness * Planning, organization, and problem solving/analysis skills * Results driven and Flexibility * Personal effectiveness/credibility and technical capacity skills * Continuous learning * A high level of confidentiality is required regarding all client specific data and safeguarding the information from other clients and competitors. * The ability to gather and analyze information, find possible solutions, select the best option, and evaluate the decision is required. * A high attention to detail is required, including verifying all work completed. * This position has no direct financial or budgetary responsibilities. * This position has no supervisory responsibilities. * There is a requirement to maintain and update documentation on all processes and procedures for client-based workload. * All electronic and hardcopy confidential information must be secured when unattended. * This position participates on a team of rate specialists and requires backing up other rate specialists and assisting with workload as needed. Education/Experience: * Associate’s Degree in Accounting, Business, Supply Chain/Logistics or related field, or 1-2 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience (Bachelor’s Degree preferred) * Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel * Proficient in 10-key by touch * Experience in customer service environment * Working knowledge of transportation industry, specifically commercial tariffs, transportation methods, and freight industry terminology. Working Conditions/Physical Demands: This position will sit in front of a computer for long hours at a time and may cause eye irritation or even muscle strain.  This position does not require any strenuous or physical activity.   Some travel may be required. Customary Work Hours: Shift between, 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday through Friday.
