Job Title: RBSC- Student Library Services Assistant - Office Assistant A
Reports to: Director, Rare Books and Special Collections
Hour of work: 12 hours
Hourly Rate: $16.20
Classification: AMUSE A
Duration: September 2025 – December 2025
Position Summary:
Under the supervision of library staff, the student assistant will support the daily operations of the Rare Books and Special Collections department, particularly during busy periods.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Help circulate library materials, including rare and special format items.
  • While sitting at the front desk, answer basic questions from library users in a courteous and helpful manner.
  • Assist with the organization, shelving, and processing of library materials.
  • Support preservation and care of rare materials, following handling guidelines.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by staff, such as data entry, moving materials, or preparing displays.

Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

  • Proficiency using the library catalogue.
  • Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills.
  • Clear communication skills—able to share and receive information effectively.
  • Friendly, service-oriented attitude with a focus on helping library users.
  • Able to safely lift, carry, and handle books and archival materials.
  • Previous experience in a library or similar environment is an asset.

McGill University is an English-language institution. Verbal and written English communication are often required. This position requires English proficiency at level 3 (on a scale 0–4).
