Positions are available throughout Breathitt, Knott, Leslie, and Perry County School districts!
All positions will begin on October 20, 2025.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 18 years of age or older by your start date.
  • Must have at least a high school diploma or a GED by your start date.
  • Must be either a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States.
  • Must pass mandatory CNCS, Serve Kentucky, and Hindman Settlement School background checks.
  • Must not have served 4 or more terms of service previously with a state or national AmeriCorps program.
  • Speak, read, and write English fluently.
  • Interest in education, specifically helping children develop early language and literacy skills.
  • Dedication to community service.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to navigate online systems and email.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Organized, responsible, flexible, motivated and professional.
  • Ability to accept and incorporate constructive feedback from coaches and program staff.
  • Excellent time management and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse personalities.
  • Ability to adapt to a sometimes challenging, high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to perform limited amounts of physical/manual labor (i.e., lift up to 20 pounds).

Responsibilities
  • Conduct one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions with students using curriculum and intervention resources provided by Hindman Settlement School.
  • Assist children to improve their reading and/or math skills and abilities to reach grade level expectations.
  • Provide opportunities for family involvement for intervention students, including implementing semi-annual community programs/events at assigned service site.
  • Develop and maintain a weekly tutoring schedule for students to allow for approximately 21-25 children to receive daily 30-minute tutoring sessions.
  • Identify students who qualify for tutoring services with direction from site supervisor and program staff based on program-adopted assessment and screening practices.
  • Act on feedback and coaching from site supervisor and program staff.
  • Assess, with a high level of accuracy, students’ continual progress through progress monitoring and benchmarking.
  • Document students’ attendance, progress, scores, and interventions using an online database system.
  • Regularly review student data with site supervisor and program staff to gauge the effectiveness of the literacy intervention being used and determine if a change in strategy is necessary.
