About Us... Pānui Mai | Read to Me is a registered charitable trust. Our purpose is to inspire a passion for reading in tamariki, particularly primary age children through a reading support volunteer service for schools to support tamariki who need additional support with their reading. After completing a third successful year partnering with 17 primary schools in Hastings, Napier and rural Hawke's Bay, we are excited about growing the programme further in 2026. About the role... A Reading Support Volunteer will support primary age children to develop a love for reading and improve their reading skills. This is a great opportunity to make a positive impact in your community. Key responsibilities will include - Support tamariki to develop a love of reading by providing one hour per week, which will involve working with two different students each on a one-on-one basis for 30 minutes each during school hours (total 1 hour per week committment) Create a safe and supportive learning environment for learners Encourage and promote a love for reading through various activities such as book discussions, storytelling, and book clubs Collaborate with the program coordinator and other volunteers to develop and implement effective reading programs Maintain accurate records of learners' progress and report to the program coordinator Attend program meetings and training sessions as required Have fun!!!!! A passion for reading and a desire to help others improve their reading skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude towards learning Ability to maintain confidentiality and respect learners' privacy Flexibility and willingness to adapt to different learning styles and needs Ability to pass a police vetting check Time Commitment: Volunteers are required to commit to at least 1 hour per week during school hours for the duration of the programme.
