EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

Chu Cho Environmental is seeking a skilled environmental professional to join our terrestrial ecology team. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in supervising operational reclamation and earthworks, coupled with experience in soil classification and a strong drive to expand their knowledge. This role involves overseeing and collaborating with equipment operators and contractors during land reclamation and restoration activities across diverse sites, including remote reservoirs, mining and exploration locations, and road restoration projects. A key responsibility will be conducting soil classifications, with a focus on enhancing the candidate’s proficiency and experience in this area.
The preferred candidate will have a background in project management, experience working in remote field settings under various weather conditions and demonstrated competence in performing field-based soil surveys. Proficiency in supervising and collaborating with heavy equipment operators is essential, as is the ability to contribute to scientific reporting and proposal writing. As part of a multidisciplinary team, experience conducting field assessments of vegetation, lichen, and wildlife habitat will be considered an asset.

REQUIREMENTS:

• A B.Sc. degree or diploma with a background and/or significant experience in a field related to soil science, reclamation, ecology, environmental science, forestry, or related with a focus on soil classification and reclamation.
• M.Sc is an asset.
• Ability to lead field-based soil classification surveys using the Canadian systems of soil classification and Field Manual for Describing Terrestrial Ecosystems in British Columbia
• Familiarity with the flora of northern British Columbia is an asset
• Significant experience in the operational implementation of machine-based reclamation and restoration activities.
• Physically fit and able to conduct field work in all weather conditions.
• Willing to complete up to 14-day field shifts, and adaptable to changing schedules
• Strong problem solving, logistics coordination, and hazard mitigation skills.
• Ability to work in remote and rugged environments such as exploration and mining camps.
• Positive attitude, willingness to learn and develop professionally, while enjoying the outdoors.
• Comfortable and/or willing to safely drive on radio-controlled forest service roads
• Dependable and able to work independently as required.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Strong knowledge and experience with operational reclamation and restoration.
• Experience directing and working in and around heavy machinery on active work sites, with a focus on implementing reclamation and restoration activities.
• Experience using the Canadian systems of soil classification and Field Manual for Describing Terrestrial Ecosystems in British Columbia in the field.
• Experience working with Indigenous communities, organizations or governments.
• Experience with remote terrain navigations and using GPS.
• Experience conducting vegetation, lichen, and wildlife habitat surveys is an asset.
• Additional certifications/qualifications including Occupational First Aid Level 1, ATV or UTV training, etc. Please list on your resume.
• R.P. Bio., P. Ag., or P. Geo. designation, or eligible within 36 months.

• Provide field level supervision of machine operators, and other professionals engaged in the implementation of operational reclamation and restoration activities, which will include machine earthworks, logistics coordination, seeding, pre-disturbance surveys, and post treatment monitoring.
• Lead field-based soil classification surveys using the Canadian systems of soil classification and Field Manual for Describing Terrestrial Ecosystems in British Columbia.
• Develop and implement field based reclamation trials to evaluate different soil amendment strategies and plant species for revegetation after disturbance and infrastructure.
• Mentor and train others, including field technicians and on-site environmental representatives, as required.
• Work in remote field environments in a wide range of weather conditions.
• Liase with Regulators and site level department managers, as required.
• Mobilize and maintain field gear and equipment.
• Scientific analysis and report writing.
• Conduct desktop research.
• Assist with the preparation of proposals.
• Conform and assist in administering the company Health, Safety and Environment policies.
