THE POSITION:

We are looking for a full time (0.8 FTE) Weekday Child and Youth Care Counsellor for a 14 month contract to cover a maternity leave. This position has a strong possibility of extension. This position will be scheduled Monday to Friday with rotating shifts of 8:30am-3pm one week and 3pm- 9:30pm the next week.
Reporting to the Program Coordinator, our Child and Youth Care Counsellors are members of an interdisciplinary team which assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the treatment program(s) for youth. The Counsellor participates in all facets of program life and is responsible for our youths’ daily care, treatment, health, nurturance, and supervision.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree or Diploma in Human Services or Social Sciences
  • Experience in Therapeutic Campus-Based Care treatment (preferred)
  • Excellent engagement, behavior management, assessment and counseling experience with high-risk youth and their families
  • Strong understanding of substance use and mental health and its impact on youth and families; knowledge of community resources
  • Ability to learn relevant theories, skills, and practices as required for providing interventions for persons accessing the program
  • A high level of personal maturity and responsibility, and the ability to relate and work effectively with co-workers as a member of the treatment team
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Cross cultural competence; knowledge of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the recommendations, goals and activities of the commission.
  • A clear police check, which includes a vulnerable sector search, is required (or is in process of being completed) prior to employment
  • Clear Child Intervention Record Check
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license and ability to drive Agency vehicles is preferred (min. 3 years driving experience with a class 5/GDL class 5 license).
  • Completion of ASIST, First Aid, Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and Certification with CYCAA would be considered an asset

Responsibilities:

  • Engage and support youth ranging from 12 to 19 years old who are experiencing physical and emotional withdrawal symptoms from the effects of substances, and/or experiencing issues related to mental health
  • Monitor and work directly with the youth in all aspects of their life within a therapeutic milieu
  • Participate and engage youth in structured recreational and therapeutic group activities related to substance use, mental health, and healthy living
  • Supervise, organize, implement, and actively participate in daily living activities; help youth see these as opportunities for education and therapeutic intervention
  • Demonstrate appropriate conduct in terms of behaviour, appearance, and presentation, and adhere to Agency and partnership expectations with regard to confidentiality when dealing with youth, parents/guardians, co-workers, other professionals, and the public
  • Demonstrate initiative, collaborative problem solving, and flexibility to meet the needs of youth
  • Model socially acceptable values, i.e., integrity, fairness, respect, self-care, and accountability.
  • Improve the quality of life for the youth by attending to their physical environment
  • Attend to team responsibilities in terms of participation, communication, and demonstrating a positive attitude
  • Support in other programs in the Safe Directions Continuum as required
