Job Title: Recreation Coordinator
Department: Residential Services
Employment Status: Part-time/Regular/Non-Exempt
Reports to: Residential Manager
Qualifications: An individual with strong convictions who is also in agreement with White’s mission statement, Statement of Faith, and Code of Conduct. A High school diploma or equivalent is required, Bachelor’s degree preferred. One to two years of experience in youth ministry, recreation, coaching, physical education, or related field preferred.
Job Summary: The Recreation Coordinator will plan and facilitate all recreation activities for all youth placed at Josiah White’s. They will demonstrate a variety of options to match varying interests of the youth in care. Performance requires the ability to work independently with initiative and discretion within established guidelines. The individual must demonstrate sensitivity to our service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics and needs.

SKILLS, SUPERVISION, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITY

  • The Recreation Coordinator must be an individual with a professional commitment to work with children and youth of all ages, community professionals, and the White’s Residential treatment team.
  • Must demonstrate initiative and the ability to complete work assignments with moderate to minimal direct supervision.
  • Must understand the Family Teacher role including use of the Teaching Family Model, daily schedule, behavior modification, and group management.
  • Must be able to independently lead activities and manage groups of students with various behavioral and mental health concerns.
  • Must be dependable, well-organized, and an effective time manager.
  • Must clearly, concisely, and professionally communicate ideas through good verbal and writing skills.
  • Must understand basic counseling/helping skills.
  • Must maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Must personably, genuinely, empathetically, and emotionally communicate and interact with youth.
  • Must be a team player –enjoy working closely with other staff members and to be flexible, adaptive, and positive in his/her actions.
  • Must be a positive role model for the children and youth assigned.
  • Must have the ability to build rapport with patrons of a broad age range and recreational interest.
  • Must maintain appropriate hygiene and attire.
  • Must be committed to the Mission, Core Values, and Vision of Josiah White’s.
Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and direct assigned recreation programs, activities, and special events.
  • Plan events for youth such as mixes, movie nights, game play, and other social activities.
  • Plan activities and coordinate the schedule for the three school breaks during winter, spring, and summer.
  • Collaborate with the treatment team, student chaplain, and supervisors to ensure safety and social concerns will not result in disruption for youth involved in activity.
  • Must use good communication skills to share upcoming events effectively, be able to handle large groups of people, give clear instructions, and motivate participant.
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries and relationships with youth in care.
  • Perform administrative tasks as needed and manage an activity budget.
  • Plan, implement, and evaluate recreation programs and make sound recommendations for improvement.
  • Perform consistent and scheduled checks on facilities and equipment. Perform approved routine maintenance as needed. Report any concerns to supervisor.
  • Maintain schedule and oversight of Josiah White’s Club basketball team including coaching or identifying the coach of the team.
  • Maintain schedule and oversight of Josiah White’s clubs (volleyball, basketball, game, etc.) as applicable.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the VP and Executive Director of Residential Services.
