Montgomery County Department of Recreation is a nationally recognized and award-winning agency with a mission to provide high quality, diverse, and accessible community-based programs, activities, and services that serve the recreation and leisure needs of the Montgomery County community. The department manages 39 facilities including recreation centers, senior centers, and indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities and provides thousands of programs such as out-of-school activities, aquatics, classes, youth and adult sports programs and leagues, senior programs, and therapeutic recreation.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The Department is seeking a dynamic, experienced, and energetic Recreation Supervisor to lead operations within our Community Facilities and Programs team. This role requires a proactive leader with strong organizational skills, a passion for community engagement, and the ability to oversee staff, programs, and facility operations. The ideal candidate will be skilled in planning and delivering diverse recreational services, managing day-to-day logistics, and fostering inclusive, vibrant community spaces.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW

  • Selected candidates must complete a background investigation and medical history review before appointment.
  • Recreation facilities operate 6–7 days a week, typically 10–12 hours per day; programs and events frequently take place in the evenings and on weekends.
  • This position requires availability beyond the typical 40-hour workweek, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and occasional outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Recreation Supervisors must be responsive to inquiries from management outside normal work hours.
  • This is an Essential position, requiring the ability to respond to emergencies during and outside of regular hours and to report to work during emergencies or when liberal leave is in effect.
  • Completion of mandatory trainings is required within the first 3 to 6 months of employment or as specified by policy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible recreational work involving planning, organizing, supervising, and implementing an area-wide, countywide or special interest recreation program.
  • Substitution: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
  • Possession of a valid Class “C” (or equivalent) driver’s license

Successful candidates will bring strong experience and demonstrated abilities in:

  • Leading staff, including training, coaching/mentoring, performance management, timekeeping, scheduling, and conduct oversight.
  • Planning, organizing, and evaluating center operations and programs, and implementing corrective actions when needed.
  • Addressing customer inquiries and concerns with timely, thoughtful responses.
  • Researching trends and developing marketing strategies to promote recreational, educational, sports, and youth-serving programs.
  • Designing and managing community-based programs with clear goals and measurable outcomes.
  • Participating in budget development, monitoring expenditures, and using data to guide decisions.
  • Overseeing program promotion, scheduling, and execution in alignment with departmental priorities.
  • Communicating effectively both internally and externally, verbally and in writing
