Description

Under the general supervision of the Recreation Services Coordinator, this Recreation Technician E position will be offering physical activity and leadership development to youth in residence at the Manitoba Youth Centre (MYC), build a bridge to our community programs, and offer multiple special events for youth at the MYC. The initiative is to develop community-based prevention and intervention strategies and initiatives to tackle gun and gang activities. The target population for the program is those youth currently incarcerated in the MYC and transitioning back to the community.
The Recreation Technician E primarily oversees the provision of recreation services available for a cross section of the community. The position oversees program planning and implementation in a designated recreation section.
The position assists the Recreation Coordinator with recreation related planning proposals, program development and scheduling. This position assists the Recreation Coordinator in defining program options by liaising within the community e.g. networks, groups and organizations to assist in identifying program interests.
This position maintains an inventory of available instructors, and ensures program evaluations are reviewed after each session. The Recreation Technician E selects, supervises, schedules, orients, trains and provides feedback to junior staff, volunteers and contract service leaders.
This position will facilitate facility bookings, perform administrative tasks which may include the purchase of supplies and equipment, track and report on attendance, collect fees, monitor expenditures, and maintain other records.
The position provides assistance to external groups/organizations related to service provisions (e.g. equipment, staff person, running a special event, facility rental etc). Provides input to the Recreation Coordinator in researching community needs and new program trends and the preparation of leisure awareness materials.

As the Recreation Technician E, you will:

  • Plans and schedules the delivery of recreation programs and services.
  • Coordinates the selection, training and evaluation of related staff, program leaders and volunteers. Schedules and supervises staff, related to programs.
  • In accordance with City and Departmental policies and guidelines, maintains financial and other information related to programs.
  • Assists in the development/maintenance of operational program and other data in systems
  • Perform other duties associated with the position

YOUR EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent, AND
  • A Degree or Diploma in Recreation/Leisure Services, Community Development, Business Administration or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.
  • Some positions may require a current St. John’s Ambulance First Aid Certificate and Level CPR C, or equivalent as per departmental policy.
  • Minimum 3 years of work experience related to recreational programming.
  • Must have relevant supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of recreation and delivery of leisure services philosophy.
  • Demonstrated experience in administration, scheduling and coordinating recreation activities/programs and staff normally acquired at a junior classification.
  • Ability to use a computer, maintain databases, input and generate reports and maintain clear records.(i.e. computerized registration system etc.)
  • Working knowledge of recreation equipment and general knowledge of facility maintenance and operations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of requirements to provide a safe environment for public and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English – oral and written. Ability to communicate in other languages is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills both oral and written in dealing with all levels of staff, community and the public in a respectful manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain respectful relationships.
  • Ability to make presentations for training purposes and lead staff meetings.
  • Must be willing to attend/complete other training as identified by the department.
  • Ability to work various hours as may be required.
