Job DetailsJob Location: Amador, CA 95666Position Type: AmeriCorpsSalary Range: $0.01 - $0.01 HourlyJob Category: Wilderness & Recreation Management The Research Associate Program at GBI, in cooperation with the United States Forest Service in Foresthill, CA, is recruiting (1) Recreation Technician to serve on the Tahoe National Forest performing work in support of the forest’s recreation program. The Research Associate will be a member of the developed recreation crew for the American River Ranger District. The technician is responsible for implementing both annual and long-term work plans for recreation sites (campgrounds, day use sites, etc.), both developed and dispersed, with primary emphasis on developed campgrounds. The technician will patrol management units to collect user data, identify and/or correct unsafe conditions, answer visitor inquiries, deter vandalism, and gather current information on recreation opportunities. They will provide visitors with up-to-date information about recreation opportunities, conditions, and Forest Service rules and regulations; providing information on resource management practices, regulations and current conditions. Maintain developed sites e.g., roadside and/or backcountry dispersed sites. Make repairs, remove or replace facilities, and/or close areas of facilities when hazards cannot be promptly eliminated. Maintain District recreation facilities such as toilets, road closure gates, hand pumps, water systems, picnic tables, fire rings, barriers, dumpsters, and other miscellaneous structures. May assist USFS staff with other duties such as posting reservations, and coordinating with volunteer campground hosts. Primary Responsibilities: Ensure all safety protocols are followed; Assist in the development of plans for recreation area maintenance, rehabilitation, and reconstruction; Perform day to day maintenance of recreation sites including campsites, and day use areas; Assist in the implementation of recreation operation and maintenance plans for developed and dispersed recreation sites; May recruit and train temporary employees and volunteers; Provide public education on matters such as fee compliance, public safety, and resource protection; and Coordinate with USFS Forest Protection Officer and/or Law Enforcement staff to report violations and write incident reports. *Members are required to take a mandatory 30-minute lunch break each service day. This break does not count toward their service hours for the education award. Timeline: Early May through end of August Full time (40 hours/week) Schedule: can vary dependent on duties Location: The Tahoe National Forest is located in the north-central Sierra Nevada Range between Lake Tahoe and the Sacramento Valley. The land rises from an elevation of 1,500 feet in the Sierra foothills on the west to 9,400 feet along the rugged ridges of the Sierra Crest. Interstate 80 and Highway 49 crisscross the Forest and offer year-round access. The American River Ranger District is located in Foresthill, CA, Placer County. Compensation and Benefits: Compensation: $800/weekly stipend (before taxes) Segal AmeriCorps Education Award (450 hour): $1,956 upon successful completion of term; Benefits: Company-paid comprehensive medical, dental (with option to upgrade in coverage), and vision insurance; $25,000 Basic Life & AD&D insurance at no cost; Access to Pro Deals; Eligibility for SNAP benefits, Loan Forbearance, and Loan Interest Accrual Repayment; Segal Education Award: After successfully completing an AmeriCorps term of service members are eligible to receive the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. Award varies based on term of service. You can use the award to repay qualified student loans and to pay current educational expenses at eligible institutions of higher education and training programs. Student Loan Forbearance: If you are currently paying on any federal student loans you have the option to put those loans into forbearance during your time as an AmeriCorps volunteer, that will allow you to cease payments while serving. Interest Accrual Repayment: As an AmeriCorps alum, you are eligible to have the National Service Trust pay all or a portion of the interest that accumulated on your qualified student loan(s) during your term of service. These payments are made in addition to the Education Award, and are not deducted from your Education Award balance. To be eligible to have accrued interest paid: The loan must have been placed in forbearance for the service period, and you must have successfully completed a term of service and received an Education Award. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Eligibility: AmeriCorps Volunteers are eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). QualificationsQualifications: Required: (This AmeriCorps position is open to US Citizens, Nationals, or Permanent Residents age 17 or older) Related degree or coursework in Recreation, Natural Resource Management, Education/Interpretation or comparable field; Strong interest in resource management; Must provide a valid driver’s license and possess a clean driving record; Experience/familiarity with field work and data collection; Knowledge of public outreach and communication tools and techniques to identify audiences and messages; Familiarity with the diverse range of outdoor facilities and maintenance requirements, such as, visitor centers, trails, wayside exhibits, in order to provide safe, wildlife and environmental-dependent recreation opportunities for visitors; Skills in oral and written communication; Ability to assist with the implementation of natural resource-dependent recreational programs; Ability to perform work within well-established parameters; Ability to provide quality information, education and interpretive services to increase the public’s understanding and appreciation of natural resources, their conservation and management; Interest in the development of natural resource-dependent recreational opportunities that minimize impacts to public land while simultaneously promoting the overall mission of the Forest Service; Interest in making contacts with the general public, co-workers, volunteers, support groups, conservation organizations, and other audiences to welcome and orient visitors, interpret recreational and/or historical sites, explain Forest Service policies and regulations, coordinate work efforts, and assist with partnerships; and AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limited to earning equivalent of two full-time education awards), (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Website (NSOPW) name search and federal criminal background check, (4) adhere to the rules, regulations and code of conduct as specified in the Member Service Agreement; and (5) not engage in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement. Preferred: Demonstrated experience and comfort with public speaking and communicating with diverse audiences; and Interest in the overall mission and goals of the Forest Service.
