We have an immediate opening for a Referral Coordinator/Health Information Specialist at our Caribou Health Center. Applicants should be comfortable using computers, possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, be attentive listeners, effective problem solvers, and able to prioritize tasks while working both independently and professionally. Previous healthcare experience is preferred, but we’re happy to train the right person! Position Summary: The Health Information Specialist provides exceptional customer care to Pines Health Services patients, staff, and the community it serves. The Specialist will be responsible for medical record prepping, scanning, and indexing into the electronic medical record as well as release of information requests and medical records release according to the organizations processes. Referral Coordinator Responsibilities: Schedules all patient-physician referrals and most Radiology tests that require appointments/Insurance authorizations and notifies patients of the appointment dates. Processes all insurance referrals for most providers at Pines Health Services. Processes insurance appeals. Receives all phone calls regarding patient referrals in a courteous, accurate, and friendly manner. Completes paperwork for physician approval. Mails, faxes, and electronically sends appropriate paperwork to the referral physician’s office. Mails, faxes, transmits or calls in referral to the insurance company. Sees that all testing requisitions get faxed to appropriate testing facility. Maintains appropriate physician and insurance log for each carrier. Maintains pending results and follow up. Health Information responsibilities: 1. Scans batches of both medical records and/or loose pages and indexes to the appropriate section of the patient's medical history. 2. Reviews medical records for accuracy and completeness. 3. Files and retrieves organized medical records. 4. Manages inbound faxes and indexes into the medical record or routes to the appropriate resource. 5. Manually indexes non-standard documents to the correct encounter and document type. 6. Performs quality control and corrects any errors during the preparation, scanning, and indexing of the medical charts. 7. Responsible for processing all release of information requests for the organization. 8. Answers phones and handles requests for information in a confidential, professional, and reasonable manner. 9. Remains informed of all HIPAA requirements and regulations. 10. Complies with local, state, and federal laws and regulations. Requirements Availability Requirements: Monday through Friday work schedule; occasional overtime as authorized. Education and Experience: High school or G.E.D. equivalent.
